Man is Like a Wild Ass’s Colt
Mark 11:1-11
The passage before us deals with the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. When Jesus rode into Jerusalem he was riding on the colt the foal of an ass. This had been prophesied in Zechariah 9:9 as well as in Genesis 49:8-11. While this presents Jesus as the king of the Jews we are going to look at the colt as a type of a lost man.
In Job 11:12 we see that Job said a vain man is born like a wild ass’s colt. This makes since because man is born lost as a result of Adam’s sin. Therefore we are all like the colt the foal of the ass we need to be broken by the Lord Jesus Christ.
The colt as a type of a lost person:
1) The colt was tied (verse 2)
- This pictures a lost person who is bound with the cords of their sins (Proverbs 5:21-22).
- Note also that Jesus said to loose him (verse 2)
2) No one had ever ridden him before (verse 2)
- You have to ride an ass to break them. This also pictures a lost person who has never been broken.
3) He was by the door (verse 4)
- Jesus Christ is the door (John 10:9) and it will be by him and him alone that we enter into heaven (John 14:6).
- The colt was tied by the door and probably did not even realize it. Many today are lost and standing right by the door but yet do not even realize it.
4) He was in a place where two ways met (verse 4)
- Once you realize you are a sinner before God you will have a decision to make and there are only two paths you can choose. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved or reject him and eventually die and go to hell (Matthew 7:13,14).
5) There was opposition to loosing the colt (verse 5)
- Satan will do everything he can to keep a lost person from being saved.
6) When he was brought to Jesus, he was given new clothes (verse 7)
- This is a great picture of salvation. Before we are saved our righteousness is as filthy rags before God (Isaiah 64:6). But after salvation we are clothed with the righteousness of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21).
7) Jesus sat upon him (verse 7)
- When Jesus sat upon him we was broken and Jesus was able to ride him. Once we are saved Jesus should be in control of our lives (Romans 12:1-2).
In the Old Testament the firstling an ass was to be redeemed by a lamb (Exodus 13:13). And if it was not redeemed by the Lamb then its neck was to be broken. Therefore we see that if the ass was not redeemed it was to suffer the same fate as a man who was hanged, a broken neck. (Deuteronomy 21:22-23). When a man hanged on a tree he was said to be cursed. Jesus was said to have redeemed us from the curse of the Law by being crucified on a tree. (Galatians 3:13).
So as a type of a wild ass’s colt you will either be redeemed by the lamb or bear you own sins and die as a cursed man. The solution is simple believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved.
