The Hungry Soul Prov 27:7

When you are hungry, you will do just about anything to satisfy your hunger.  A working man says, “I’m so hungry I could eat an elephant.”  Esau despised his birthright he was so hungry.  He said, “Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?”  He made a bad choice but he demonstrated that when a man is hungry enough he will do whatever it takes to eat.  Coaches teach athletes to win by teaching them to hunger for the victory more than anything else.  Athletes say, “You gotta want it… you gotta hunger for it.”

So hunger is beneficial when it causes you to seek something good to satisfy your hunger.  The Lord kept Israel just hungry enough in the wilderness to teach them to live, not by bread only, but by the words of God.  See Deut 8:3.  Moses was one who certainly learned the lesson, Ex 34:27-28.  Jesus learned this lesson, too, Matt 4:1-4.  Of course, those who didn’t learn this lesson despised the Lord because they grew weary with their hunger.  See Num 21:5.

By contrast, being full is not beneficial when it causes you to despise the things that are good for you.  We tell children, “Don’t eat that… or you won’t be hungry for supper!”  In Deut 8:10-14 the Lord said, “When thou hast eaten and art full… Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God.”  Israel became full when they rested in the Promised Land and they did just what the Lord said they would do; they forgot the Lord.

Our text in Prov 27:7 says, “The full soul loatheth the honeycomb.”  That sounds like you after supper when the waitress comes by offering dessert.  You say, “I’m as full as a tic.  I’m so full, I could pop.  I can’t eat another bite.”

Christians are full of all the “junk food” the world has offered and so they have no desire for the beneficial words of God, God’s honeycomb for his children [Ps 19:9-10, Ezek 2:9-3:3].  You are undernourished like children who have eaten lots of candy before supper.

You need to be spiritually hungry.  And when you are even the bitter things in the word of God will taste sweet to you [Rev 10:9-10]. Prov 27:7 says, …but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.  You need to hunger and thirst for righteousness; then you will be filled [Matt 5:6].  You “gotta want it… you gotta hunger for it.”

You need to cut the worldly junk food out of your spiritual diet and get hungry for the things of God.  I have heard men say, “I wanted ‘that’ so bad I could just taste it.”  Haven’t you ever wanted God and his words so much that you could just taste them?  David did.  He said, “O taste and see that the Lord is good,” Ps 34:8.

Folks, let’s hunger and thirst for righteousness so that God will fill us with his goodness.
