The Seeing Eye – Prov 20:12 – God made your eyes but he didn’t put a gate on them – your eyes are obviously for seeing but not for looking at everything you can see – the children’s song, “Oh be careful little eyes what you see…” is a great warning – when Ham looked upon his father’s nakedness, the Lord cursed his son, Canaan – the Lord didn’t equip your eye to see outside of the light spectrum without optical help – thus there are things that you cannot see that must be believed by the faith of God’s words that reveal them to you.

There are several kinds of eyes that we want to study in the Bible:

The Single Eye – Matt 6:22 – this is the eye that basically sees what God wants you to see and sees it the way that God wants you to see it – for this reason, David said, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes,” Ps 101:3 – this eye “sees” the Lord as in “O taste and see that the Lord is good” or as in “Turn your eyes upon Jesus” – these eyes are filtered by the fear of the Lord, Rom 3:18.

The Evil Eye – Matt 6:23; Mk 7:22 – this is the eye that basically looks at things God doesn’t want you to see or sees things God wants you to see in a way that God doesn’t want you to see them – this eye is controlled by a wicked heart – evolutionists that see God’s creation and conclude that it is evidence of evolutions have an evil eye – it’s not that they cannot see the revelation of God in creation; it’s that they have an evil eye from an evil heart that cases them to see what you see in a way that God did not intend for them to see it.

The Closed Eye – Matt 13:15 – this is the eye that could see what the Lord wants you to see but which refuses to open to see it [like the eyes of slumber that caused Israel to miss Jesus Christ and the prophecies that he alone fulfills, Rom 11:8] – people who worship idols have closed eyes – they have eyes but they see not, Ps 115:5 – if you are concerned when you read the Bible that your eyes might miss something that the Lord wants you to see, you should pray Ps 119:18, “Open thou mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law” – Open thou mine eyes illumine me… is a great hymn.

The Lustful Eye – 1 Jn 2:16- this is the eye that sees something and that cannot resist the temptation to have it – it looks for things appealing to the flesh and fails to “see” the spiritual things of the Lord – so the devil appealed to Eve’s eye when he tempted her – but according to Prov 27:20 the eyes of man are never satisfied – so you can never satisfy the lustful eye – this eye is similar to the covetous eye of Jer 22:17 – it wants what it wants regardless of the cost to get it.

The Adulterous Eye – 2 Pet 2:14; Matt 5:28 – this is the eye that entices men and women with sex – that’s why sex is the seller in advertising today and this is why kids are getting in trouble with sex today.

Conclusion: Develop your single eye by eliminating everything from your eyes except for that which you know for sure the Lord wants you to see – over time, like the slow process of recharging a battery with solar power, your heart and mind will begin to change as will your eye – you will notice that the evil, closed, lustful, adulterous eyes will begin to go blind.

And remember what the Bible says about God’s eyes – Gen 16:13 Thou God seest me – Prov 15:3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place – Ps 11:4 his eyelids try the children of men – 2 Chr 16:9 the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth – Ps 34:15 the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous – Heb 4:13 all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do – Ps 94:9 he that planted the eye, shall he not see?
