People often ask for help in understanding their Bible.  Here are a few things that will help you in understanding your Bible.  Understanding your Bible:

Doesn’t take intelligence – Lk 10:21; 1 Cor 1:26-27; Lk 2:46-47.  Jesus Christ was only 12 years old when the doctors marveled at his understanding.  The Lord reveals his words to babes, not to the wise and prudent.  God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise.

Takes initiative – 2 Tim 2:15; Prov 2:2-5.  You are going to have to study and dig into the Bible and that is going to take lots of work.  Don’t spend all your time on the internet and in commentaries trying to learn your Bible.  Spend your time in the Bible.

Takes instruction – Eph 4:11-12; 1 Cor 4:15; Prov 19:27.  You need a good instructor.  Jesus gave the church pastors and teachers to perfect the saints.  I have learned many things through the instruction of good men.  These are things that the Lord showed them that they then showed others.  When you find that the instruction isn’t Biblical you need to cease.   Beware, there is more unbiblical instruction than there is Biblical.

Takes inspiration – 2 Tim 3:16-17; Job 32:8; Jn 14:26.  The teacher is the Holy Ghost.  Inspiration is the doctrine whereby the Holy Ghost gives you understanding in the things you are studying.   When you hit a difficult passage you simply need to trust the Spirit of God to instruct you [in his time].

Conclusion: Initiative and instruction are not enough.  Jehovah’s Witnesses have plenty of these.  You need inspiration, as well.   Without the Holy Spirit you will end up in terrible error like Jehovah’s Witnesses.
