Honour Thy Mother Eph.6 :1-3 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
The commandment concerning our mothers that is repeated in the Bible more often than any other is, Honor thy mother. In the Bible we find at least seven ways to esteem our mothers. On this special occasion, we will consider each of these carefully to be sure our mothers receive their proper respect and that the Lord, who gave us these instructions, is pleased. You are to:
Honour your mother – Eph 6:2 – the first commandment with promise… that thy days may be long on the earth – you are not to lightly esteem your mother – it was a capital crime to smite or curse your father or your mother [Ex 21:15. 17] – a foolish man despiseth his mother [Prov 15:20] – Mic 7:6 the daughter riseth up against her mother – don’t go the way of this wicked generation – honor thy mother.
Fear your mother – Lev 19:3 – this kind of fear results in you obeying her without her knowing or seeing what you are doing – obey your mother [Eph 6:1] in Prov 30:17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it [they were to stone a rebellious and stubborn child Deut 21:18-21].
Love your mother – 1 Ki 19:20 – show her proper affection.
Follow your mother – 2 Tim 1:5 – Prov 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame – after a child is old enough to be living on his own faith instead of his parents’ faith, his faith ought to still match theirs [forsake not the law of thy mother Prov 1:8].
Leave your mother – Eph 5:31 – there comes a time when it is proper and appropriate to leave home, but not until you are prepared to cleave unto your wife – too many children leave for the temporary pleasure of infatuation and not for the permanent responsibility of marriage [Ruth 2:11].
Forsake your mother – Mk 10:29-30 – [Matt 19:29] it’s the cost of discipleship and that may be the only way you will ever be able to lead her to the Lord – she has to see that Jesus is literally worth that much to you – Matt 14:8 would have been a good time for Herodias’ daughter to forsake her mother.
Support your mother – 1 Tim 5:3-4 as a widow you may need to requite her – Prov 23:22 despise not thy mother when she is old.
Conclusion: the Bible gives clear instructions on how to honor thy mother – make sure that you are doing what the Bible says – if not, reconcile your disobedience with the Lord at this altar and repent – and then go to your mother and begin doing what God shows you to do.
