Praise The Lord from the Earth Ps. 148: 7-14 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
In the prior lesson we studied about things the Lord made in the heavens that are there to praise him. In this lesson we will study about things that praise the Lord from the earth. You will notice in this section of the psalm that these things that praise him are of particular importance during the tribulation, second coming and millennial reign of Jesus. In other words, they are prophetic. The things in the earth that praise the Lord are the:
Dragons – Is 34:13 – these are real – see komodo dragons – they will inhabit the palaces of defeated nations – the greatest dragon is the devil [Is 27:1; Rev 12:3, 9] – he was designed to praise the Lord when he was created as the anointed cherub that covereth – notice that he is a musical being with stringed, wind, and percussion instruments within him [Ezek 28:13-15; Is 14:11-12] – he will certainly praise the Lord in Phil 2:9-11.
Deeps – in the earth these are the depths of waters [Neh 9:11] and the pit [Ps 88:6; Num 16:31-33].
Fire – particularly at the second coming of Jesus [Ps 18:8; 2 Thes 1:7-9] – notice how the fire resulted in praise for the Lord in 1 Ki 18:36-38.
Hail – particularly at the Second Advent [Ps 18:12-13] – notice how the hail was used to demonstrate the great power of the Lord in Ex 9:18, 22-25.
Snow – there are treasures in the snow [Job 38:22-23] – at the second advent the snow will accomplish two great functions – first, it will provide defense to the Jews from the armies of the antichrist by preventing them from approaching and, second, it will be connected with manna which will sustain the Jews who will be without provisions because they will have to run when the antichrist comes and they won’t have the mark of the beast to buy or sell [Ps 68:14, 147:16-17; Mic 7:14-15; Ex 16:13-15] – notice the connection of snow to the word of God [Ps 68:11-14; Ps 147:15-20; Is 55:10-11] – this brings to mind that Jesus came down from heaven as the bread of life and said “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Vapour – another tribulation reference [Acts 2:19; Job 36:32-33] – the vapor, like fog, will prevent the armies of the antichrist from being able to find the Jews.
Stormy wind – this wind is often sent for judgment and for a testimony to the power of God [Ex 14:21; Ps 107:25-26].
Mountains – Jer 3:23 – this is where idolatry had taken place – however, when you consider the first and second advents of the Lord, mountains are very significant – consider Mt. Sinai, where Moses fasted and received the ten commandments, where Jesus undoubtedly fasted in the wilderness and where he will first return at his second coming – the Mt. of Olives, where Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane and where Jesus will dismount when he returns – Mt. Calvary, where Jesus died – Mt. Moriah, where the temple was built and where Jesus will rule the world – and Sela Petra, where many of the Jews will be hiding when Jesus returns and where he will travel from Sinai to rescue them on his way to defeat the antichrist.
Hills – Ps 121:1-2 – also where idolatry had taken place but more importantly the place from which Jesus will return.
Fruitful trees – Ezek 47:12 – particularly the tree of life.
Cedars – Is 41:18-20 – the Lord will landscape the desert and the wilderness with cedars and other beautiful trees when he returns.
Beasts, cattle, creeping things and fowl – Ps 150:6; Ps 145:21; Rev 5:13 – all of these have breath and flesh and they will all praise the Lord when he returns – they will all be at peace and under his dominion and care [Is 11:6-9; Ps 145:15-16].
Kings – Ps 138:4; Rev 21:23-24 – right now they just curse him and want to rule without him – but when he returns, those who survive will praise him.
People, princes and judges – Is 26:19; Is 65:18-19 – whoever is here for the millennial reign of Jesus will praise him – too bad the judges aren’t praising him now!!
Young and old – Joel 2:28-29 – regardless of age or gender they will praise him.
They will praise his name – Acts 4:12; Phil 2:9-11; Eph 1:20-23 – because his name is above every name.
And Israel will be exalted – Ps 149 – they will also praise him, finally!!
