When the Lord returns, he is called by several names:

Faithful 19:11 – totally trustworthy, he is absolutely dependable to do exactly what he said he would do [i.e. 1 Corinthians 10:13, 1 John 1:9]

True 19:11 – he is true in the sense that he is the standard by which all righteousness is judged and also in the sense that he is totally reliable – Pilate questioned Jesus on this attribute John 18:37-38 and Jesus told his disciples that he is the truth John 14:6

A name only he knows 19:12 – this will be the tetragrammaton [the name of God comprised of 4 Hebrew radicals that no man knows precisely how to pronounce] – Ex 3:14 and John 8:58

The Word of God 19:13 – John 1:1, 1 John 5:7 this name shows that he is God and that God uses words to reveal himself to man

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS 19:16 – there are certainly many kings and there are certainly many lords [1 Corinthians 8:5-6] but there is only one supreme King and one supreme Lord as far as God is concerned and that is his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ 1 Timothy 6:14-16 and soon he will be the king over all the kingdoms of the earth [Revelation 11:15]

Here are the notable details on the Lord’s return that we can find in this passage of scripture:

19:11 heaven opened – this is the second time [Revelation 4:1] – the first time was at the rapture of the church age saints and the second time is for the return of the Lord with his saints

19:11 a white horse – this horse and rider are often mistaken for the horse and rider seen after the opening of the first seal [Revelation 6:1-2] – but these are not the same at all – the rider of Revelation 19 is the Lord Jesus Christ – he makes war in righteousness, his eyes are a flame of fire [Revelation 1:14] and on his head were MANY crowns, not just one – the rider of Rev 6 comes promising peace but he uses this false proclamation to destroy [Daniel 8:25, 11:21-24] – Jesus comes promising war and does indeed destroy his enemies to establish peace

19:11 – judge and make war – his judgment is two-fold – he judges the nations at his return [Matthew 25:31-46] but his judgment is also like that of the judges in the Book of Judges who deliver the Jews from their oppressors – it is no surprise that he makes war at his coming because that is the single most prophesied event in the Bible [comp 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9]

19:13 clothed with a vesture dipped in blood – this is the fulfillment of Isaiah 63:1-6 and results from the Lord treading the winepress of Almighty God [Revelation 19:15, Revelation 14:19-20] at which time 100’s of millions of people are killed

19:14 armies which were in heaven – these are the saints that were raptured to be with the Lord – we join the Lord in his fight to destroy agnostics and unbelievers [2 Thessalonians 1:7-9] – in Joel 2:1-11 we see that we are invincible – we have supernatural bodies and it is impossible for anyone of us to even be wounded in the fight – here is sobering thought – all of the friends, family and acquaintances you have that reject Jesus Christ and who survive to this point are going to be killed in this war – shouldn’t you try to win them to the Lord – that will certainly be better than slaying them with a sword and sending them to hell

19:14 fine linen white and clean – see Revelations 19:8 and notes

19:15 the sword and the rod of iron are discussed in the next lesson
