Who Shall Intreat For Him? 1 Sam 2:25 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO

1 Sam 2:25 is a tremendous preaching verse.  Using the proceedings of a court to illustrate the problem that Eli’s sons are going to have with God, Eli implores them to repent of their wicked deeds.  And like so many men who are faced with the reality of their judgment before God, they just scorned Eli’s question and kept right on doing what they were doing.

If you were sued for a wrong doing, you wouldn’t nonchalantly wait for your court date and walk up casually to the judge and say, you’re a good guy, Mister Judge.  You wouldn’t sentence a good guy like me, no matter what this other fellow says.  So, declare me innocent and let’s get on with our day.  No, you would hire an attorney and you would gather your evidence and you would tell everyone who is willing to listen to you that you are innocent.

Yet when you are faced with your judgment before Almighty God, you act like this is going to be no big deal.  “You’re a good guy, Mister God; you wouldn’t condemn a good guy like me.”

Eli tried to talk some sense into his sons and they wouldn’t listen.  I’m going to try to talk some sense into you and I hope you will listen.  You have a problem coming up one of these days and you’d better do something about it.  You’re going to face God at a judgment concerning everything you have done in your life and there is no way you are going to be able to represent yourself at that judgment.  You have sinned and you have sinned against the Lord God Almighty.

You’re going to need someone to entreat for you.  And the question Eli asked is who?

The answer is:

The Daysman Jesus Christ – Job 9:33 – As a daysman, Jesus is an arbiter.  That is he is qualified to judge on behalf of God Almighty.  So, when the thief on the cross asked the Lord to remember him in his kingdom, the Lord could say without reservation, “Today, shalt thou be with me in paradise.”  Jesus Christ is the only one who can take God by the hand and you by the hand and bring you together.  He can judge you today and declare you not guilty.  He can guarantee you a victory at your judgment before God and no other representative can do that.

The Mediator Jesus Christ – 1 Tim 2:5 – Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man.  In order for a lawyer to practice mediation, he has to be licensed and he has to be accepted by the court as a due representative in those proceedings.  The only man allowed by God to mediate between himself and sinners is the Lord Jesus Christ.  His purpose is to reconcile you to God [2 Cor 5:17-21].  Mary will never do.

The Advocate Jesus Christ – 1 Jn 2:1 – An advocate is a lawyer, basically.  He is a defense attorney, in the case of the court of God’s judgment.  Jesus Christ is the only advocate who has never lost a case.  He’s on your side.

The Lamb Jesus Christ – Jn 1:29, 1 Jn 2:2 – Jesus is the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.  Jesus is the propitiation for our sins.  That is his sacrifice appeased God’s wrath for our sins so that when he presents himself to God on our behalf, God has no wrath toward us.  Jesus has substituted for our sins and paid for them fully.  Thus there is no more need for a sacrifice.  When God judges us, he doesn’t see us; rather, he sees his perfect Son.

Now, if you were going to have an attorney represent you in court, you would have to hire him.  And you would want the best.  Likewise, for Jesus to represent you, you are going to have to receive him.  He is the best and he is the only one.  You receive him by asking him to save you.  The Bible says, “Ask and you shall receive,” [Jn 16:24, Mat 7:8, 21:22].  Receive him today!
