David’s Commitment Ps. 86:11-12 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
In Ps 86, Davids commitment to the Lord was threefold. He committed to walk in truth, praise the Lord, and glorify his name. These are three things that we should commit to do. Davids commitment was:
I will walk in thy truth – Ps 86:11 – David committed to walk in God’s truth and he kept his commitment [1 Ki 3:6]. Walking in the Lord’s truth is the way for a Christian to walk [3 Jn 4]. First, we must be taught, and therefore learn, to walk in truth [Ps 86:11]. You cannot walk in the truth unless you know what the truth is. Second, we must, with undivided heart (David said, “unite my heart”), fear God [Ps 86:11]. Our heart cannot be torn between two things and we cannot be double-minded. We must commit to walk in the truth like David did.
I will praise thee – Ps 86:12 – David said, “I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart.” Just consider all the psalms that David wrote to praise the Lord and you will see that he surely kept his commitment. We must, likewise, praise the Lord with all our heart. We don’t praise the Lord enough when we are doing well [we’re too intense]. We complain and fret and worry too much, when we aren’t doing well. Jehoshaphat praised the Lord when facing a terrible battle [2 Chr 20:20-22]. Paul praised the Lord after enduring a great beating and an unlawful imprisonment [Acts 16:25]. We must commit to praise the Lord like David did.
I will glorify thy name – Ps 86:12 – David said, “I will glorify thy name for evermore.” If you consider David’s life, it was filled with trouble. And yet God delivered him out of all his trouble and David glorified God [Ps 50:15]. That is the chief work of the Spirit of God inside every Christian [1 Cor 6:19-20] and that is why he does “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” in the church [Eph 3:20-21]. We are here to glorify God and our church is here to glorify God, as well.
Conclusion: Like David, we must commit to walk in the truth, praise the Lord and glorify his name. That was Davids commitment and it should be ours, as well.
