In the passage for this sermon we see where God healed Hezekiah from his sickness that was going to kill him. God gave him 15 more years on his life. We will use Hezekiah as a type of a person who gets saved in this sermon. Note he does not get saved like we do today because he lived in the Old Testament before Jesus Christ. We are saying that he is merely a type of someone getting saved.

To answer the question of what is the meaning of life we must first look at the source of life.

Source of Life :

The source for all life is God (Acts 17:24-25).

  • Genesis 2:7 “And the Lord God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
  • Job 33:4 “The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.”
  • Psalm 36:9 “For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.”

Man’s original purpose : (Genesis 1:28 ; 2:9,16)

From these verses we see that Adam was to be fruitful and multiply, have dominion over the earth, and eat of the tree of life and live forever.

Fast forward to the years of Solomon the wise man who ever lived. And See what he had to say about these matters (Ecclesiastes 6:1-7). Things really changed. The things that Adam was supposed to do now are all vanity and do not amount to much. What happened?

The problem is that Adam chose the wrong tree to eat from. Adam ate of the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and death entered into the world. Man is now a sinner and under the penalty of death.

This explains why man is trying so desperately to get back to where Adam was in the Garden of Eden and regain what Adam lost. The problem is that he cannot do this because of sin.

This is where we see Hezekiah in Isaiah 38:1-3. Facing death with no way out!

God’s solution to man’s problem :

Since the wages of sin is death then God must find a way to get life back into man. So he sent his only begotten son who was life to die for mans sin and pay the penalty for death.

John 1:1-4 (Life was in Jesus Christ)

John 5:26 (The Son hath life in himself)

John 5:39 (Scriptures testify of Jesus Christ)

John 6:63 (The words Jesus spoke were spirit and life)

John 10:10 (Jesus came so that we could have life and have it more abundantly)

John 14:6 (Jesus is the way the truth and the life)

The only way to have life is to have Jesus Christ. To do this you must be saved and born again.

In Hezekiah we see type of a lost man God said he would die. In Ephesians 2:1 we see that a person is said to be dead in trespasses and sins before they are saved.

In Isaiah 38:16-17 we see Hezekiah given life back and his words are “and make me to live”. Note also that his sins are behind God’s back. This is a type of what happens when a person is saved in the New Testament.

What is the meaning of life?

The meaning of life then is simply to live. That was what Adam lost when he sinned. That is what Hezekiah wanted most. The problem is that without Jesus Christ there is no life. Man must realize that there is something beyond the grave and to live you must be saved. If you have not ever been saved then you do not have life.

In the book of Job Satan said, “Skin for Skin, yea all that a man hath will he give for his life”. While this true for most, he miscalculated with Job because Job knew about the resurrection.

Job 19:25 “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upo the earth.”

Job 19:26 “And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.”

The question becomes what is your life? (James 4:14)

Life here on earth is short and if you are not saved then it will end in hell. You should receive Jesus Christ as your savior before it is too late and really begin to live.

If you are saved you should serve because in the end only what is done for him will last. (2 Corinthiasn 5:14-15)
