Looking Well to thy Herds
(Proverbs 27:23-27)
The passage for this lesson is a unique passage and it is often used for pastors in regards to tending to their churches. But if we look at it carefully there is a lot everyone can get out of this passage. There is a lot about business and life in general that could be gained by practicing this Proverb.
Quick Outline for the Passage :
1) Look well to your herd (verse 23)
- We have to consider what is in our care and be faithful stewards of what God has given us (1 Corinthians 4:2 ; Luke 12:48)
2) Riches are not forever (verse 24)
- The reason we must consider what is in our care is because it will not always be in our care. (Proverbs 27:1 ; James 4:13-14)
3) The hay appeareth (verse 25)
- There is a proper time for everything and if we are trying to do the wrong thing at the wrong time we can really waste valuable time and effort. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)
4) The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field (verse 26)
- There must be balance in all things (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)
5) And thou shalt have goats milk enough for thy food (verse 27)
- Here we see the result of all of the above steps.
How can we achieve the results of verse 27 in our life?
1) Put everything in God’s hand (James 4:13-14)
- We must realize that everything we have comes from God and we should strive to look well to what he has given us (James 1:17)
2) Look well to your herd (Proverbs 27:23)
- To do this we must consider what we have, consider the value of what we have and consider life without what we have.
- If these are done we would be much more diligent in looking well to our herds.
3) Work for the Day but plan for tomorrow (Proverbs 27:25-26)
- To be a success in life we must have a plan. We must think toward the future in every action that we take.
