Waters in a Garment Prov. 30: 4 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO

In Prov 30:4, Agur asked, “Who hath bound the waters in a garment?”  This is a profound question coming from a man who professed to be brutish and lacking in wisdom and knowledge.  As we study the Bible you’re going to see that God bound the waters above the universe in the garment of a cloud.

Water is Above the Universe

In Ps 104:5-7, we see that the Lord laid foundations of the earth. He covered it with the deep as with a garment. Waters stood above the mountains and “at thy rebuke they fled.”  In this passage you’re seeing Gen 1:2, where waters covered the earth, and Gen 1:6-10 where God made a firmament and caused some of the waters to flee away.

According to Ps 148:4, the waters that fled away are the waters above the heavens. These waters provide a separation, like a dividing line between the darkness and the light [Gen 1:3-5].

According to Ps 104:2-4, the Lord covers himself with light as with a garment. He stretched out the heavens like a curtain.

God Bound the Waters in a Garment

In Job 26:8-9, God bound the waters in the clouds and the cloud is not rent.  These clouds are not the clouds you see in the sky.  This cloud is what holds the waters above the heavens.  This cloud “holdeth back the face of his throne.”  In Job 38:8-9 God shut up the sea with doors.  God made the cloud the garment thereof, and darkness was a swaddling band for it [talking about the sea, the waters above the heavens].

To summarize thus far, God clothed himself with light.  The water under him is the deep.  The face of this water is frozen [Job 38:30].  John saw this water as a sea of glass like unto crystal [Rev 4:6].  From earth (or the Hubble telescope) we cannot see his throne.  The waters in the deep are bound in the cloud [garment] and darkness is under the deep.  So, our universe is dark.  The heavens are spread out like a tent and we dwell on the earth in this tent [Is 40:22].

In Time, God Will Remove This Garment

When Jesus returns, he will rend the heavens [Is 64:1].  Habakkuk saw the Lord walking through “the sea” with his horses (the armies in heaven that follow him) [Hab 3:15].

In time, the Lord is going to change the heavens, “As a vesture shalt thou fold them up,” [Heb 1:10-12].  He is going to change them like a man changes clothes [Ps 102:25-27].  This happens at the end of the millennial reign of Jesus [Rev 20:11].  Heaven and earth flee away and, according to Rev 21:1, there will be no more sea.  No more waters bound in a garment.
