Light and Darkness, 1 Pet 2:9

Light and Darkness 1 Pet 2: 9 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO

According to 1 Pet 2:9, when God saved us, he called us out of darkness. And he called us into his marvelous light.  To fully appreciate this contrast and what the Lord has done for us, we must study darkness and light.

Darkness

This universe is in darkness [Gen 1:2-5].  That’s one of the reasons God made the sun, moon and stars.  Without them we would have no light on earth [Gen 1:14-17].

This world is in darkness [Eph 6:12], under the ruler of darkness.

Men are full of darkness [Matt 6:23] and walk in the ways of darkness [Prov 2:13]

Light

God is light [1 Jn 1:5]. In him is no darkness at all.

Jesus is light [Jn 8:12; Jn 1:4-9].  He shined in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not.

God’s word is light [Ps 119:105; 119:130].

Children of darkness

When Jesus was in the world, he came to save men out of darkness [Jn 3:19].

Those who reject him wind up in outer darkness [Matt 8:12, 25:30], which is only fitting since darkness is what they love [Jn 3:19].

Children of light

Those who receive him become children of light [Eph 5:8].  He called us out of darkness into his marvelous light [1 Pet 2:9].

Our duty, then, is threefold:

  • to walk in the light [1 Jn 1:7]. We are not to walk in darkness [1 Jn 1:6],
  • to reprove the works of darkness with the light of Christ that is in us [Eph 5:8-14], and
  • to turn those who are in darkness to light that they may be saved [Acts 26:18].

Conclusion: are you a child of darkness?  Then receive Jesus Christ and become a child of light.  Are you are a child of light?  Then do your duty.
