Why We Fail at Biblical Authority in Families

Gen. 3

Last week, Pastor started this series of Sunday School lessons with “Biblical Authority in Families”. Since God created the family, we can clearly see throughout the Bible His clear instruction of authority, and how He gave man dominion, and the rule over his family. The breakdown of this authority is clearly seen in families today. Adam and Eve had a major breakdown in Genesis chapter 3. What are some of the problems that cause us not to rule our families like God has instructed us to?

A Problem with Biblical Facts      You don’t know!

Eve had a real problem getting her facts correct. Verse 2 – she subtracted from, verse 3 – she added to. Originally, God told Adam the facts when Eve was not even created yet (Gen. 2:17). There was a complete breakdown in the translation to Eve. Someone had a problem with the facts. Men, do you know what God said? Does your wife and children? Adam and Eve had no other instruction before they met up with the Devil, God’s truth is all they had ever heard (you don’t need anything else). They had no worldly influences or other methods to follow. They fell for the devil’s distortions being as pure and isolated as they were. How pure and isolated are you? What are your chances with all the worldly distortions and influences of the day? You can never know enough Bible.

(Deu. 6:6-9 [thou], 4:9-10 [teach]), (2 Tim. 3:14-17 [learned], 2:15 [not to be ashamed]) Must be taught. Must be learned. Must know the Facts.

A Problem with Godly Fear          You don’t care!

#1, Adam and Eve had no fear of God, nor the consequences he had given them, “ye shall surely die” (Gen.2:17), I believe they only understood this as a “concept” (at this point no one had ever died!), just like we only understand the judgement seat of Christ as a “concept”. It’s real!!! We will all give account… (Rom.14:10-12, 2 Cor.5:10-11 [terror of the Lord]) Because of (Ecc.8:11) many of don’t even fear consequences.  Fear God NOW, then consequences and Judgement seats are not an issue.

#2, We are afraid to address the problem, fear of wife, kids, in-laws, etc.… (Prov.29:25). Many a man has said “it’s ok with me”, that’s what Adam probably said, (1 Tim.2:14). It’s a sign of the times (Isa.3:12). We ought to be afraid not to!!! (1 Cor.9:16) necessity is laid upon you!!!! It is not too late to stop and start doing it God’s way.

A Problem with Walking in Faith                                You don’t believe!

Breakdown caused by not believing that God’s way was right. Disobeying God (verse 6, …took of the fruit thereof, and did eat…) proves you don’t believe him, what a slap in the face! They did what was right in their own eyes (Judges 21:25, no king in the land, no authority) that is walking by sight. She only saw the good, verse 6, the 3 temptations (1 Jn.2:16). Obedience is the perfect proof of your faith. Partial obedience is disobedience (1 Sam. 15:13,20,22-23)

(Luke 6:46-49) Disobedience will ruin your house.
