Solomon Asked About Destroyed Foundations
Ps 11:3 says, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” The indication is that the righteous can’t fix the problem without replacing the destroyed foundations. They must not only tear down structure on the foundation, but they must replace the foundation so they can build a new structure. That’s what the Lord had to do during Jeremiah’s day [Jer 1:10].
Most authors who write about America’s problems like to end their books with a positive plan of action to correct the problems that we face. But the truth is that all the positive action has only prolonged the problems in the country. No one is fixing the underlying problems. And the reason that they aren’t fixing them is that they are foundational. So what can the righteous do?
The Destroyed Foundations in America Are:
Our Spiritual Foundation
This country had a spiritual heritage. We saw tremendous work from the Spirit of God in the past. Our country had blue laws on Sunday to limit merchandising because it was the Lord’s day. The Medical Association placed ethical limitations on certain medical procedures like heart surgery because the Lord made the heart. We’re not suggesting that the advancements in heart medicine are bad. No, not al all. We are only reminding you that laws of conduct were often based upon spiritual foundations. But this country has drifted far from God. A repentance in this country like the repentance in Jonah’s day in Nineveh is unthinkable.
Our Moral Foundation
We are in moral decay and corruption. Two generations ago, abortion was illegal. It was reprehensible. There are still many who find it reprehensible, but it is legal. The same is true of same-sex marriages. The same is true of drugs. The numbers of children born out of wedlock are staggering. The challenge to authority in the homes, the classrooms and the cities is rooted in the fact that our moral foundation is destroyed. Sin is legal and in many cases promoted.
Our Financial Foundation
Our country’s financial problems are irreparable. We are 20 trillion dollars in debt and without limiting spending, we’ll reach 30 trillion dollars in debt in the next decade. We can’t go on like this forever. The borrower is the servant of the lender. The lender is in control. With natural disasters and wars looming [Matt 24:6-7], we’ll need even more money than the current projections. You don’t think our enemies will lend to fund our military expansion, do you? So, the Federal Reserve will have to print more money to fund more debt. Every time that happens, the foundation grows weaker and weaker. Eventually, it will collapse.
Our National Foundation
This is a country terribly divided. “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth,” [Lk 11:17]. Practically, we are not “one nation,” we are not “under God,” and we are not “indivisible.” We are divided. And a country divided against itself cannot stand. It’s just a matter of time.
Our Political Foundation
We have entrusted the “fix” to politicians. But it takes “gobs” of money to run a successful campaign. And those who give substantially wield substantial power. Politicians must keep the donors happy to stay in office. Thus, they will never make the significant changes necessary to restore our country’s political foundation. It takes statesmen to make those kinds of changes and statesmen are and will continue to be in short supply. Voters don’t elect statesmen, and, if they do, they won’t reelect them.
Conclusion
The righteous can’t fix these problems. We must continue praying [1 Tim 2:1-3]. Christians must continue witnessing to individuals. God’s people must continue living righteously. We must continue fellowshipping with the Lord. And we must keep looking for Jesus’ return. Only God can fix these problems. He may or he may not. We’ll leave that to him while we take care of the part that he wants us to do.
