Some Christians are suckers for miracles. They believe that preachers who perform miracles are more powerful than preachers who don’t. They think that a miracle is evidence of the great working of God in a man or a woman’s life. But today we will see the fallacy of this belief.
John did no miracle [Jn 10:41].
Jesus said, “Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist,” [Matt 11:11]. Do you understand? John was greater than all the prophets who were able to perform miracles in the Old Testament. Miracles don’t make the man. Certainly, some great men performed miracles. Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and Paul were all great men and they all performed miracles. But they weren’t great because of their miracles.
Unfortunately, most people are gullible enough to believe those who profess to be miracle workers and reject the word of God. They don’t realize that the devil can and will give men power to perform miracles to get the world to follow him [2 Thes 2:9]. That’s why the antichrist is going to be able to deceive the world so thoroughly during the Tribulation.
There has to be more to a man than miracles for him to be a man you should follow. He should have some of the traits of John the Baptist. So, if it wasn’t the power to perform miracles that made John great, then what was it? John’s greatness was in his:
Spirituality – Lk 1:13-17. He was filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother’s womb. And he was definitely a God-called man [Mk 1:1-4]. He didn’t fake spiritual gifts.
Humility – Jn 3:29-30; Matt 3:11; Matt 11:11 [least]. He was cousin to the Messiah, the King of the Jews. And yet everything he did pointed others to Jesus Christ [Jn 1:35-37]. He drew no attention to himself.
Submissiveness – Matt 3:13-15; Jn 1:6, 15-23. He did God’s will; not his own will. And he did it to the peril of his own life.
Fearlessness – Matt 3:7-12; Matt 14:3-4; Lk 3:19. He was a powerful preacher who was not afraid of anybody but God. He stood up to the religions leaders of his day and he stood up to Herod.
Conclusion: if you want to be a real man of God, then be filled with the Spirit, be humble, be submissive, and preach fearlessly. And don’t follow miracle-working charlatans who pretend that they have power because they work “miracles”. Remember, “John did no miracle”.
