The Best Thing for Mothers Prov. 31:30

This is Mothers Day and we usually give our mothers special attention on this day.  The best thing you can do for your mother is to:

Praise a mother who fears God – Prov 31:30 – she’s not a society woman, trying to impress others.  She’s a God-fearing woman.  She trusts God.  She submits to her husband so that God can work through him to lead her and their family.  Praise her and praise God for her.

Bless a mother who guides the house – Prov 31:28 –  Prov 30:11 there is a generation that… doth not bless their mother.  Have you considered what it takes to guide a house with children?  Bless your mother for her work and thank her continuously, not just on Mothers Day.

Honor a mother who commands you – Eph 6:1-3 – you honor her by your obedience. A gracious woman retaineth honor [Prov 11:16].  In the Old Testament, Deut 27:16 says, “Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother.”  That is to lightly esteem them, to disrespect or dishonor them.  In the New Testament, Jesus toughened the commandments of the Old Testament.  There is a great need for you to obey your mother.  We live in an age where the “daughter riseth up against her mother,” [Mic 7:6].

Follow a mother who instructs you – 2 Tim 1:5 – Timothy’s mother taught him.  In Prov 31:1 Lemuel’s mother taught him.  Heb 13:7 says, “Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word fo God: whose Fatih follow, considering the end of their conversation.”  Naomi was Ruth’s mother-in-law but Ruth followed Naomi’s God like a daughter should follow her mother’s God, if her mother’s God is the God of the Bible.  A preacher friend of mine has five children.  They are all serving God in the ministry today.  I asked one of the sons why he thought his whole family followed Dad in the ministry.  Without hesitation he said, “My mother always practiced at home what my father peached at church.” Follow her faith.

Conclusion: these are four of the best things you can do for your mother.  They are much better than flowers, a card and a gift, although you should do those things, as well.  And before we close, consider Gal 4:26, “Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.”  If you have received Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are a child of God.  God is now your Father and New Jerusalem is now your mother.  Honor her with a good testimony.  If you have not yet been born again, then heaven is not your home, New Jerusalem is not your mother and God is not your Father.  You can change that today by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ.
