The Deity of Christ Revealed in His Prophecies Is 7: 14 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO

We are familiar with many of the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, because the New Testament often records when they are fulfilled.  However, it is interesting to note that in these prophecies you can see his deity.  We see the deity of Christ in his:

Virgin Birth – Is 7:14 – Christ’s virgin birth is a miracle.  No other human has ever been born of a virgin.  This miracle was accomplished by the Holy Ghost [Lk 1:34-35].  It was the means by which God could manifest himself in a body [Heb 10:5].  And his name, Immanuel, testifies to his deity [Matt 1:23].  Emmanuel means “God with us.”  In this body, God was able to destroy death, make reconciliation for our sins, and help us in times of temptation [Heb 2:14-18].

Royalty – Jesus was born King of the Jews in Bethlehem – Matt 2:1-6 – The chief priests and scribes confirmed that his birth was prophesied to be in Bethlehem [Mic 5:2].  The ruler in this prophecy is “from old, from everlasting.”  That’s because he is God.  Notice in Is 9:6-7 that his name shall be called “The mighty God, The everlasting Father.”  Those names and his eternal life testify to his deity.  In Is 9:7, there is no end to his kingdom and his throne is established for ever.  Therefore, as the Son of God he is God.  The Jews understood this [Jn 5:18].  They just didn’t believe him.

Genealogy – Ps 132:11; Lk 1:30-33 – Jesus is the son of David [Matt 1:1].  And as the son of David, there are prophecies concerning his reign and priesthood.  From Matt 22:41-45, we see that Ps 110 is a direct reference to the Messiah.  In that Psalm, David calls him Lord, indicating that his genealogy is not only from David but also from God.  Mary is his mother and, therefore, he is the Son of Man.  But God is his Father and, therefore, he is the Son of God.  He is the Lord; he is God manifest in the flesh [1 Tim 3:16].  And his priesthood is for ever [Ps 110:4] which is only possible because he is the eternal God [1 Jn 5:20].

Messenger – Mk 1:2 – John the Baptist was the messenger who fulfilled the prophecy of Mal 3:1 which said that he “shall prepare thy way before thee.”  However, when you look at Mal 3:1, it says, “he shall prepare the way before me.”  The person speaking is the LORD of hosts, as you see at the end of the verse.  The LORD is God Almighty.   Therefore, the testimony of the Bible is that Jesus is God Almighty manifest in the flesh and manifest to Israel by John 1:29-31.

Resurrection – Jn 20:9; Ps 16:10; Acts 2:30-32 – David prophesied that Jesus would rise from the dead, and indeed he arose.  All of the disciples, initially, had a hard time believing that he was alive.  But Thomas was the one who adamantly refused to believe it until he saw Jesus for himself.  When Thomas saw him risen from the dead in Jn 20:26-28, he professed, “My Lord and my God,” thus proclaiming his deity.

Conclusion: after Thomas’ profession, Jesus said, “blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed,” [Jn 20:29].  You have not seen and yet will you believe?  These things are written “that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name,” [Jn 20:30-31].
