You have a giant in your life that you need to face.  This giant could be a secret sin in your life, an addiction, a fault that must be dealt with, a fear, an unfinished duty, etc.  And every time you think about facing this giant you back down.  When we read about the fight between David and Goliath, we learn how you can face that giant in your life.  

You’ve been afraid to fight him – 1 Sam 17:11 – Israel was dismayed and greatly afraid of Goliath.  They could not get up the courage to fight him.  Each man was sure he would lose.  It may be hard for you to acknowledge that the reason you haven’t whipped that giant in your life is that you have just been too scared to deal with it.

You’ve been procrastinating – 1 Sam 17:16 – Every morning and every evening for forty days, Goliath had been presenting his challenge to Israel.  No man would take him on.  They just kept putting him off.  Likewise, you know that you must face this giant in your life someday.  You can’t keep putting this off for ever.  He’s not going away.

You’ve been the loser so far – 1 Sam 17:23 – Goliath is called “the champion.”  The champion is the champ because he has defeated everyone else and no one has defeated him.  If you won’t fight him, he is the champion, by default, and you are the Loser.  In other words, you’re afraid that you might lose; but, in fact, you’ve lost already.  You have to fight him to overthrow him.  

You must decide to fight him now – 1 Sam 17:32 – David said, “thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”  You have to make up your mind and commit to the same thing or you will never face him.  There is a cause [1 Sam 17:29].  He must be whipped.

You’ve got the weapons you need – 1 Sam 17:38-40 – Goliath had a sword, a spear, a shield [v.45], a shield bearer [v.7, 41], a helmet of brass, a coat of mail, greaves of brass and a target of brass [v.5-6].  Besides that he was a man of war [v.33].  All David had was a staff, 5 stones, a sling, and a scrip [v.40].  Those weapons don’t seem even close to a match.  Yet, in the hands of a man of God a staff beats a spear [2 Sam 23:21] and a stone beats a giant [Jus 20:16, v.49].  The scrip and the extra stones were totally unnecessary [Matt 10:9-10]. 

You fight in the name of the Lord – 1 Sam 17:45-46 – David’s weapons worked because of one thing, David had the Lord on his side [1 Sam 17:45-46] and so do you [2 Cor 10:4 mighty through God; Eph 6:10 Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might].  Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengthenth me.  

You fight with the determination to win – 1 Sam 17:46-47 – David said, “I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee.”  David didn’t even have a sword with which to cut off Goliath’s head.  But he didn’t need one; he used Goliath’s [v.51].  When Goliath came out to meet David, David “ran to the army to meet” him.  He didn’t hesitate.  He. Was going to kill the giant that day, and he knew it.  You need to fight with the same confidence in the Lord and the same conviction that there shouldn’t be a giant that has you too scared to fight and win.  

You give glory to God – 1 Sam 17:46-47 – “that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.”  God gives the victory and you want others to know that he has won a battle against a giant in your life when the fight is done.  

Conclusion: Face that giant in your life.  With the Lord’s help you will have the victory.  You will have the head of that dead giant for a trophy when the battle is done [v.54].  Just like a hunter with a trophy mount.
