The Saints’ Delight, Ps 37:4

These are the things in which the saints should delight.  The saints’ delight should be:

The Lord – Ps 37:4 – “Delight thyself in the Lord…”. You delight in the Lord by loving him [Matt 22:36-37]; by knowing him [Phil 3:10]; by fellowshipping with him [1 Jn 1:3]; by praying to him [Prov 15:8]; by pleasing him [Rev 4:11]; by walking with him [Gen 5:22-24]; and by looking for him [Titus 2:13].  In the meantime, we should delight in suffering with him [Rom 8:16-18; Acts 5:41].

The Lord’s goodness – Neh 9:25 – “… and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.”  Look where Israel was in Egypt before the Lord delivered them and where they ended up in Canaan.  Just think about where you are today and from where you came.  Look at all the Lord has done and continues to do for you.  He daily loadeth us with benefits [Ps 68:19].

The Lord’s law – Ps 1:2 – “his delight is in the law of the Lord.”  See also Ps 112:1; Ps 119:16, 24, 35, 47, 70, 77, 92, 143, 174.  Rom 7:22.  Delight in his words.  When you delight in God’s words, you will read them, meditate upon them, apply them in your life, and obey them.  You can perceive the truth by them, which will help you to put current events in perspective.

The Lord’s peace – Ps 37:11 – “… and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” The context of this passage is the Millennial reign of Jesus Christ.  This world will not have the peace it professes to desire until the Prince of Peace arrives.  Until then, the number one thing that we need is peace in our lives.  The world says they want it but they war and fight continually in their pursuit of it.  They have peace in their lips and war in their hearts.  The peace which passeth all understanding is what keeps our hearts and minds inn every situation.  This peace is the fruit of the Spirit.

The Lord’s way – Ps 37:23 – “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delghteth in his way.”  The Lord’s way is by far the best.  Seek his way.  Walk in his way.  Don’t take the detour.  Every step of the way is beautiful.  We know that heaven is our home.  When you delight in the Lord, the “way” to our home is delightful.

Conclusion: many saints have been allured into loving the world and loving themselves. These are vain pursuits.  Instead, delight yourself in these things in which the saints delight.  You will find satisfaction, joy, and contentment in these things which you cannot find in anything else.
