My Soul Thirsteth For God, Ps 42:1-2

My Soul Thirsteth For God

In Psalm 42:1-2 the psalmist said, “My soul thirsteth for God.”  In order to thirst for God you have to be really thirsty; thirsty for something even water can’t quench.  When your soul thirsteth for God, nothing else will satisfy.  God directs you to this thirst.  Notice:

The Jews in the wilderness were thirsty – Ex 15:22-26 – Moses led Israel out into the wilderness of Shur, where they found no water.  The Lord said that he did that to prove them [Ex 15:25].  In Ex 17:1-7 they were thirsty in Rephidim, where the Lord brought water out of the rock.  That rock was Christ 1 Cor 10:4.  He was directing Israel to turn to him, to thirst for him.  Israel never did figure it out.  In Jer 2:13, Israel forsook the Lord, the fountain of living waters.  They turned away from him.

The poor and needy in the Tribulation will be thirsty – Is 41:17-18 – these saints cry out to God and God says, “I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.”  You see, this kind of thirst is not about the water; it’s about the God of the water.

The woman at the well was thirsty – Jn 4:10-15 – she wanted the water that Jesus offered so “that I thirst not,” [Jn 4:15].  You can tell that she quenched her thirst with something other than the water in that well.  She left her waterpot in Jn 4:28.  She found water from the Lord that was far better than the water in that well.

Are you thirsty enough to thirst for God yet?  The Lord may lead you into a wilderness in your life; that’s to get you to thirst for him.  You may be going through a real trial in your life right now; that’s to get you to thirst for God.  You may have tried, like the woman at the well, much of the pleasure that this life has to offer and you’ve found that you’re still thirsty.  That’s just what God wants for you at this moment.

Do you want to quench your thirst?  Then here’s what to do.  Come to Jesus.  You are not going to satisfy your thirst in any other well or in any other way.

In Jn 6:35, Jesus said, “he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

In Jn 7:37-39, Jesus said, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”

In Rev 22:17, the Spirit and the bride say, “Come.”  “Let him that is athirst come.”

You will find what you’re longing for if you will thirst for God.  Like David said “My soul thirsteth for God” In Ps 63:1, he said, “early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee.”  Read the words of the hymn “Satisfied,” [Hymn 446 in The Great Hymns of the Faith].
