Reconcile the hour of the crucifixion, Mk 15:25. 

In this post we reconcile the difference between, Mk 15:25 and Jn 19:14.  Mk 15:25 says, “And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.”  Jn 19:14 says, it was “about the sixth hour” when Pilate “saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!”  Furthermore, Matt 27:45 says, “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.”  Luke’s gospel says the same thing in Lk 23:44.  

John’s time appears to contradict Matthew, Mark, and Luke’s time.

The reconciliation is simple.  Matthew, Mark, and Luke used Jewish time and John used Gentile time.  

The Jewish day begins at 6 pm and the Gentile day begins at midnight.  So, on Jewish time, the first twelve hours are night and the remaining twelve hours are day.  On Gentile time, the first twelve hours are counted from midnight to noon and the remaining twelve hours are counted from noon to midnight.

Therefore, according to John’s gospel, at 6 o’clock in the morning (the sixth hour), Pilate said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 

Then, according to Mark’s gospel, at 9 o’clock in the morning (the third hour), they crucified him.  Then, according to Matthew and Luke, darkness was over all the land from noon (the sixth hour) until 3 o’clock in the afternoon (the ninth hour), when Jesus died.
