Walk in the Law of the Lord, Ps 119:1-16

THE AUDIO RECORDING OF THIS SERMON

Ps 119:1 says, “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.”  If you want to be truly blessed of the Lord, “walk in the law of the Lord.”  When you walk in the law of the Lord:

You’ll be blessed – Ps 119:1-2 – “Blessed… who walk in the law of the Lord” to be blessed is to enjoy spiritual prosperity and the favor of God.  When you check early references to the word “blessed” in the Bible you can see the spiritual prosperity of God.  In Gen 1:22; 1:28; 9:1 and 17:20, the blessing of God made those who were blessed “fruitful.”  We are to bear the fruit of the word of God, of the Spirit of God, of the righteousness of God, and of the works of God.  How great it is to be blessed with fruitfulness in all of these.  To be blessed is also to enjoy the favor of God.  In Gen 12:3 and Gen 14:19 Abraham was blessed.  He knew the continual favor of God and those who bless him know the favor of God, as well.

You’ll be unashamed – Ps 119:6 – “Then shall I not be ashamed.”  Ps 119:3 “they also do no iniquity.”  Ps 119:5 “they keep thy statutes.”  Ps 119:6 “they have respect unto all thy commandments.”  You’re supposed to be ashamed when you’ve done wrong.  In Ezek 36:31-32 God says to Israel that “ye… shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities.”  Ashamed is not a good feeling.  It’s not supposed to be.  In Rom 6:21 Paul asks, “What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed?”  We weren’t ashamed of them until we knew them and had respect unto the law.  Now you know when you walk in the law of the Lord.  And when you walk in the law of the Lord, you won’t be ashamed.

You’ll be clean – Ps 119:9 – “cleanse his way… by taking heed thereto according to thy word.”  In Rom 6:19 we were servants to uncleanness.  In Ezek 36:33 God speaks of “the day that I have cleansed you.”  God cleanses us when we get saved and when we get turned around.  He cleanses us with his word and his blood.  But we continue to cleanse our way when we take heed to God’s law.  He shows us things in us that are not right and that we then get right because we line up more and more with his law.  He deals with us one thing at a time as we keep walking in his law.

You’ll be delighted – Ps 119:16 – to be delighted is to be full of delight, and delight is a high degree of pleasure and joy and satisfaction of mind.  Delight is more permanent pleasure than happiness because it’s not dependent on sudden excitement.  You cannot know this pleasure, joy, and satisfaction until you find it by walking in the law of the Lord.  Once you have been delighted, you know it and no pleasure in this life can compare.  Ps 40:8 “I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.”  Look at the context in Ps 40:1-5.  Is this not where some of us started?  And now, Like David, we delight to do God’s will.  This is our greatest joy.

Conclusion: if you want to be blessed, unashamed, clean, and delighted, walk in the law of the Lord.
