God Opened Their Eyes, Gen 21:19

God had to open the eyes of people in the Bible to show them something that they couldn’t see even though it was right there in front of them.  He showed them so we will know that, though we can’t see them, those things we need from the Lord are right here in front of us.

God opened their eyes:

To reveal his provision – Gen 21:19 – “God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water.”  God opened Hagar’s eyes to show her a well of water.  Hagar should have known there was water there somewhere because God had said earlier, concerning her son, that he was going to multiply her seed exceedingly, Gen 16:10.  When you are going through troublous times it’s hard to see God’s provision.  You get overwhelmed by despair and fear.  Yet, his provision is right there.  Trust him for everything you need.

To reveal his protection – 2 Ki 6:17 – “Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see.  And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw.”  God opened Gehazi’s eyes to show him the horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.  When you get overwhelmed with fear, remember that “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them,” Ps 34:7.   God will take care of you.

To reveal his presence – Lk 24:31 – “And their eyes were opened, and they knew him.”  The men on the road to Emmaus didn’t realize that they were walking down that road with Jesus.  Jesus said earlier, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them,” Matt 18:20.  Jesus is right here this morning.  And he is always with you in your home.  He said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee,” Heb 13:5.

To reveal his power – Jn 9:32-33 – The blind man whom Jesus healed said, “Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.  If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.”  The blind man knew that Jesus had to be from God in order to open his eyes.  Jer 32:27 says, “Behold I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?”  Don’t despair when you feel powerless in the face of some grave difficulty.  Jesus has the power to do anything you need.

To reveal his prophecy – Ps 119:18 – “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”  According to 2 Pet 1:20, “no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.”  You cannot rely upon your own resources to understand God’s words.  He is the one who must open your eyes to behold the wondrous things that are within his word.  And he will open your eyes, if you trust him.

To reveal his promise – Acts 26:16-18 – Jesus said to Paul, “I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee… To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”  The Lord wants you to be saved and to come out of darkness into his marvelous light.  However, the devil blinds the minds of the lost which believe not, 2 Cor 4:3-4.  Let the Lord opens your eyes.  Believe what he has promised you.  “And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life,” 1 Jn 2:25.  He wants to save you today.

Conclusion: The only one who can open your eyes to the truth is the Lord Jesus Christ.  Believe him for his provision, his protection, his presence, his power, his prophecy, and his promise.  If you are not saved, he has revealed to you his truth today.  Trust him.
