To “be content” is a command in the Bible.  Therefore:

Be content with your salary – Lk 3:14 – the laborers who agreed for a penny a day, and labored all day to get it, were upset when those who labored the last hour of the day were given the same pay, Matt 20:1-16.  You’re more likely to be discontent if you are discussing your salary with others.  The old saying was, “When I get a raise, then I’ll be content.”  That’s usually not true.  A fellow in another church told me that a man in his church was upset with him because he was more successful than than the fellow who was upset.  The trouble with this fussy fellow is that he was not content with what he was making.

Be content with your state – Phil 4:11-12 – Paul said, “in whatsoever state I am therewith to be content.”  Paul had to learn this, 2 Cor 11:27.  After he went through nakedness and hunger, then he knew.  You really appreciate a meal and clothes after you haven’t had either, 1 Tim 6:8.

Be content with your stuff – Heb 13:5 – “be content with such things as ye have.”  See Matt 6:24-34.  Do you own money or does it own you?  “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase,” Ecc 5:10.  Possession is not satisfaction; contentment is satisfaction.

Be content with your Savior – Heb 13:5-6 – He said, “I will never leave thee.”  Then it doesn’t matter what circumstances we face or what trials we are in.  The Lord is there with us through everything: medical tests, financial difficulties, the death of a loved one, a job change, a deployment, or whatever.  The Lord is right there with you through the whole thing.  Acknowledge him and trust him and be content with him, regardless of the outcome.

Conclusion: because godliness with contentment is great gain, 1 Tim 6:6, it’s something money can’t buy.  If you want to know what God thought about money, look how much he gave his Son.  With contentment you don’t need one more thing in your life. You can be content with whatever the Lord provides.  Adrian Rogers said, “Add up everything you have that money can’t buy and death can’t take away.  The sum will reveal to you how rich you really are.”
