In Prov 31:28, the children of a virtuous woman “arise up, and call her blessed”. Blessing her is all the more important in the age in which we live. Today, “There is a generation that… don’t bless their mother”. You should bless your mother.
To bless your mother is to praise her, to speak well of her, and to favor her. There are some mothers who aren’t virtuous, I understand. But this is not so true among Bible believing Christians. These are virtuous mothers.
A Prov 31 woman cherishes her children, cares for her children, and commands her children. This is what your mother does for you. So, you should arise up, and call her blessed.
When you bless your mother you:
Honor her – According to Eph 6:1-3, you honor your mother by obeying her. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right”.
Praise her – Her children arise up and call her blessed. There is nothing more encouraging to a mother than to receive words of affirmation for doing the normal things mothers do.
Favor her – Prefer her. Love her. She loves you like no one else in the world. The story of Wayne Sehmish’s mom and his favor toward her is awe inspiring.
Speak well of her – Approve her. Make sure others know just how much you love her. You only have one biological mother in the entire world. And remember, “When a child goes away from home, he carries his mother’s hand and heart with him”.
Conclusion: There will come a day when you can’t bless your mother, in the normal course of events. So follow Prov 23:22. “Despise not thy mother when she is old”. Hold her in high esteem. And remember, “The death of a mother is the first sorrow wept without her”.
