What God is Not

(Psalm 56:3 & 2 Chronicles 20:7)

Psalm 56:3 tells us that anytime we are afraid we should trust in God. This is a great verse because fear comes to us no matter what our age or circumstance. In this sermon we will look at an example of this verse being practiced by Jehoshaphat king of Judah during an invasion from their enemies.

In the example from Jehoshaphat there are some questions that he asked God. In these questions we can see some reasons for why we should trust God when we are afraid.

Reasons for trusting God during times of fear or uncertainty: (2 Chronicles 20:6-7)

1)  God is not misplaced (1 Kings 18:26-39)

• The verse says, “art thou not God in Heaven”. God is not misplaced he is right where he is supposed to be.
• Deuteronomy 4:39 (he is the only God), Daniel 2:28 (he reveals secrets), Joshua 2:11 (he makes the hearts of our enemies to melt.

2)  God has not been dethroned (2 Corinthians 4:4 with Job 1:6)

• Despite what lost and saved people alike are saying these days, God is still on the throne and the verses says that he rules the kingdom of the heathen.
• This is both encouraging and scary at the same time. Because it means when something is happening regarding our government that we do not like God is allowing it.
• For an encouraging thought read what happens toward the end of the Tribulation (Revelation 6:12-17).

3)    God is not Powerless (1 Samuel 14:6 ; Daniel 3:17)

• According to the verse there is not that can withstand God.
• When we couple this with point number 2 it is easy to see that God truly is in control.

4)  God has not forsaken his people (Deuteronomy 31:6 ; Psalm 37:25)

• This is where it gets personal, not Jehoshaphat said, “art thou not our God”.
• If you are not saved none of these others things really help you. The only hope is in God, and he must be your personal God. That is you must be saved and be a child of his.
