He Is Able, Dan 4:37

There are times in our lives when we need to be reminded that “He is able”.  Talking to Kevin Beier the other day, he mentioned reading, “God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham”, in Matt 3:9.  Such a comfort, now that his wife is going through cancer treatments.  In fact, God is able to do many things.  We’ll just look at references to the phrase, “He is able”.

To abase the proud, Dan 4:37.

Nebuchadnezzar was a ruthless king who destroyed Judah and took many captive.  God raised him up to be his servant and do his will.  But then Nebuchadnezzar made his image of gold and commanded all his subjects to worship it.  He threatened Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego with fire if they disobeyed.  Then he threw them in the furnace.  Later, he was warned by Daniel of his pride and iniquities.  He didn’t heed the warning and down he went like an ox.  God can do this to any leader of any country he desires.  As Tony says, “How are you going to steal an election from a God like that”?

To subdue all things unto himself, Phil 3:21.

He is able to change our vile body and fashion it like unto his glorious body.  And he is able to subdue diseases, winds and waves, devils, kingdoms, the devil, and death.  He is and will be over all.  If he hasn’t subdued something yet, he will.

To keep that which I have committed unto him, 2 Tim 1:12.

I am persuaded that he is able.  This is a great verse on eternal security.  You aren’t able to keep it but he is.  Many of us treat our relationship with the Lord like a religion.  We imagine that we have certain things that we must do before God will do certain things for us.  He’s going to keep you regardless of what you do.  He might have to kill you, but he’ll keep you.

To succour them that are tempted, Heb 2:18.

The greatest power against temptation in your life is He.  But you have to deal with temptation according to his will and according to his words.  When you keep ‘losing’ to the same temptation, you are leaving something out that he has shown you in his words.  You’re thinking wrong.  You are looking wrong.  Maybe, you’re doing wrong.  Or you’re not dying to yourself.  Perhaps you’re keeping something that you are supposed to let go of.  Or you are leaving something out that he has been trying to show you to do.  Or you’re doing something that he has been trying to show you to quit.

To save them to the uttermost, Heb 7:25.

Don’t quit praying for your lost friends and family.  He hasn’t.  Don’t quit witnessing.  And don’t give up.  No matter where they are geographically or relationally, they are not too far for Jesus to reach.
