In Jn 2:5, Mary said to the servants at the marriage in Cana, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it”. Mary’s advice to those servants was, “Do what he says”.
Jesus said, “Fill the waterpots with water”, Jn 2:7. They did what he said. “And they filled them up to the brim”. They left no room for disobedience. They could not have filled the waterpots more than they did.
Jesus said, “Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast”, Jn 2:8. And without fanfare, question, or the need for further instructions, they did what he said. “And they bare it”.
As God’s children we need to do what Jesus says.
Do what he says:
In the Bible. Matt 4:4, Jas 1:22. We are to live by every word. We are to be doers of the word, and not hearers only. When you read the Bible, you should read it with the understanding that God is going to talk with you in his words. He is going to tell you what to do and how to live. Do everything he says.
In sound preaching. Phil 4:9 Paul wrote, “Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you”. Paul told the Philippians to do everything he taught them to do. In preaching, God has the unique ability to speak with you individually, while he is talking to everyone in attendance, at the same time. Listen carefully for what God wants you to do and then do it.
In godly counsel. Prov 20:18 Every purpose is established by counsel… 2 Sam 16:23 the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counseled in those days, was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God… 2 Sam 16:20 Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give counsel among you what we shall do. 1 Pet 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God.
In godly counsel, the Lord speaks through the counsellor to give you direction and understanding in the matter about which you are inquiring. You should prayerfully seek counsel with the attitude that you are going to do what you hear God saying through the person from whom you are seeking counsel.
In believing prayer. Jas 1:5. When you lack wisdom, ask God for wisdom. Jas 1:6-7, “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord”.
But be prepared to do what God shows you to do in answer to your prayer. Too often, people pray to get God to bless what they have already decided to do. Instead, you must pray with the willingness to follow whatever God directs you to do. Do what he says.
Conclusion: like Mary said to the servants, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, DO IT”.
