In 2 Pet 1:1-10 Peter exhorted us to making your calling and election sure. There are certain important aspects of our calling and election that we will not discuss today. Instead, we will concentrate primarily on the main one, your salvation. When you are saved you can be sure you have eternal life:
By the gift of God’s divine power – 2 Pet 1:3. In salvation, God gives you, through his divine power, all things that pertain to life and godliness. You start living the eternal life you receive when you believe on Jesus and you have the power to live godly. These are things you could never do as a natural man. And they are evidence that you are truly saved.
By the promises of God’s divine nature – 2 Pet 1:4. The promises given to us in salvation are exceeding great and precious. God promises to answer our prayers prayed in the name of Jesus Christ. He promises to give us peace in times of trouble. And he promises that all things work together for good to them that love God and are called according to his purpose. When you see these promises being fulfilled in your life, you are certain that you are saved.
By the witness of God’s Spirit – Rom 8:14-16. The Spirit of God witnesses with our spirit that we are the children of God. This witness is so evident that even others who know the Lord can tell that you are saved by the Spirit that is in you.
By the truth of God’s word – 1 Jn 5:13. God wrote these things to us that we may know that we have eternal life. God wants us to have eternal life and he wants us to know that we have it when we have Jesus, 1 Jn 5:12.
Conclusion: When you don’t know that you have eternal life, you’re either blind and have forgotten that you were purged from your old sins, 2 Pet 1:9, or else you are lost. If you are lost, believe on Jesus and be saved today. If you are backslidden, get right with God and make your calling and election sure.
