We need the Lord to direct our steps because, “The way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps”, Jer 10:23.

We should acknowledge this truth and believe it.  Believing what God says about our inability to direct our steps will humble us and motivate us to look to God for direction.

In Prov 3:5-6, when we trust in the Lord with all our heart… he shall direct our paths.  We must trust the Lord to direct us.

And why shouldn’t we expect the Lord to direct our steps when we trust him.  Prov 20:24 says, “Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way”?  We can all see evidence of the Lord trying to direct us even before we were saved.  Surely he will direct us after we become his children.

So we should look to the Lord to lead us and direct our steps.  Look what David wrote in Ps 25:4-5, 9, 12.  He asked the Lord to “shew me thy ways”, teach me thy paths”, lead me in thy truth”.  And David prepared himself to be led by the Lord.  He was meek (submissively obedient), repentant, and God-fearing.

We are saved and, therefore, we have the blessing of being led by the Spirit, Rom 8:14.  When we trust the Lord, seek his direction, willingly obey him and fear him, we can perceive the Spirit’s leading in our lives.  Many Christians, unfortunately, are not responsive to the Spirit’s leading and are unaware of his direction in their lives.  They are not seeking the Lord to lead them.  And they are not like David was in Ps 25.

According to Ps 37:23-24 we should be “good” because “the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord”.  We really don’t know what’s good for us, but certainly the Lord does.  Thus, we should let him direct our steps.
