Introduction: Titus 2:3 gives instruction to the aged women but notice the word “likewise” in verse number 3. In verse 2, as previously taught, we received instruction for the aged men however, the word likewise of verse 3 implies that the women should also be taught the things which become sound doctrine in vs 1. In verse 3, we are primarily dealing with the women being an example in holiness and the teaching of younger women – vs 4.

1. Behaviour as Becometh Holiness- vs 3 Women are to be Holy. Reverent, devout, different and set apart in purity of behavior and thought. It is easy to LOOK holy but it’s very different to BE holy, this true holiness comes from the inside out. Women who change the outside appearance to look holy, but never allow God to change the inside, will never be Holy women as spoken of here.

• Holy Conversation– I Peter 1:14-16 “As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: but as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy”. A holy conversation is a manner of life, a behavior; this is the way a woman is to be at all times, no matter who is watching.
• Holy in The Fear of God- II Corinthians 7:1“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”. As we fear God, He will teach us to be Holy regarding our behavior. This will happen one step at a time, one little change at a time, as we read it in the Bible, we do it.

2. Not False Accusers- vs 3 To accuse is to blame or charge a person with a fault. A false accuser then could be a person who goes about talking about others, stirring up mischief and disturbance. In court, to falsely accuse someone is considered a crime and is taken seriously.

–A good example of this false accuser is found in I Timothy 5:9-16. In vs 13 we see this widow learns to be idle, a tattler, busybody, and they begin to speak things which they ought not.

I Timothy 3:8- “double tongued”- speaks one way with some and another way with others.

I Timothy 3:11- “not slanderers” -a defamer; one who injures another by maliciously reporting something to his prejudice.

Proverbs 16:28 – “a whisperer separateth chief friends”- a backbiter; one who slanders secretly.

Proverbs 16:22- “The words of a talebearer are as wounds”- a person who tells tales, and makes mischief in society.

Proverbs 20:19- “He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips”.

James 4:11 “Speak not evil one of another, brethren”. – to speak injuriously; not kindly.

3. Not Given to Much Wine- vs 3 The Bible is clear that nothing good comes from drinking anything that is alcoholic and gets a person drunk and incoherent.

Romans 14:21- “it is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor anything whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak”. The whole idea is that an older woman is teaching the younger woman and it is done by example. Weaker Christian.

Proverbs 20:1- “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise”.

Ephesians 5:18 “and be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit”.

Consequences of Wine: Proverbs 23:29-35

Isaiah 28:7 “but they also have erred through wine…they err in vision, they stumble in judgment”.

Wine used to Deceive:

Genesis 19:35 “and they made their father drink wine that night also” vs 26/31

Genesis 27:25 “and he brought him wine, and he drank”. Vs 22/vs 29-30

4. Teachers of Good Things- vs 3 If you are not teaching the younger women in the church to do these things, they will learn the things of the world which are opposite to the things of the Bible. These are great things to teach the younger women to do and to be. These things have to do with being an example and testimonywithin the home. In teaching these things, you will be teaching the younger women things that the world CANNOT teach them. In fact, the world teaches the exact opposite in this “I have rights” society.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 “And these words, which I command these this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Conclusion: You may or may not know this but the younger women are looking up to you and are watching everything that you do. They desire to be like you and will soon enough begin to emulate what they see. Be a good example.
