The Worst Thing That Could Happen To You, Ps 81:10-14

Do you ever think about what might be the worst thing that could ever happen to you?  You might think of an affliction, or a trial, or an ailment, or the loss of a loved one, or some trouble that might be the worst thing that could ever happen to you.  Certainly, any of those things could be bad, or even really bad.

But I’ll submit to you that as bad as those things can be, they aren’t the worst thing that could ever happen to you.  The worst thing that could happen is that the Lord would give you up to your own hearts’ lust and allow you to walk in your own counsels.

In Ps 81:10-14 Asaph recounts what the Lord would have done for Israel if they had hearkened to his voice.  Their time in the Promised Land would have been so much better than it turned out to be.  And their successes against their enemies would have been complete.

Instead, they didn’t subdue their enemies.  They couldn’t drive them out, Jud 2:2-3.

You would want the Lord to chasten you.  Heb 12:5-11.  Scary if the Lord not chasten you.  Adam.  Not turn over to own lusts and counsels.

You would want your conscience to trouble you.  Acts 24:16, Rom 2:15.  You don’t want complacency in doing the wrong things.

You would want friends who rebuke you.  Prov 27:5-6.  Friends that would support you in your decisions are not friends.

Conclusion: The worst thing that could happen is that God would just give you up to your own lusts and allow you to walk in your own counsels.  That’s scary!!
