The Blood that Speaks

The Blood that Speaks (Hebrews 12:22-24)

The passage in Hebrews is dealing with things that are in heaven. One of the things referred to is the blood of sprinkling. This blood is said to speak better things than the blood of Abel. In this sermon we are going to look at how God takes the shedding of blood seriously and show how the blood of Jesus speaks better things than that of Abel.

God takes the shedding of blood very serious:

Below we will look at some blood that is shed and what God says about it through the Bible.

  • Genesis 4:10-11 (Abel’s blood cries unto God from the ground)
  • Genesis 9:5-6 (After the flood God requires blood at the hand of man and beast)
  • Numbers 35:33 (Blood pollutes and defiles the land)
  • Matthew 27:24-45 (Jews tell Pilate that Jesus’ blood can be on them and their children)
  • Acts 5:28 (After the crucifixion Jews do not want the blood on them)
  • Revelation 19:11-16 ; 14:20 (Jesus treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of God)

 What did Abel’s blood speak?

 1)  He was righteous (Matthew 23:25)

  • This was a personal righteousness based on doing what God said.

2)  Needed a sacrifice to make him righteous (Hebrews 11:4)

  • The fact that he died shows us sin, and he still needed a sacrifice for his sin.

What did Jesus’ blood Say?

 1)  That he was righteous (Acts 20:28)

  • Jesus’ blood was God’s blood therefore he was not born with sin nature as we are.
  • Her was the righteousness of God (Romans 3:21-22)

2)  The he can redeem us from sin (1 Peter 1:18-19 ; 1 John 1:9)

  • This redemption because of the blood of Jesus is an eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12).

3)  It satisfied God’s wrath (Romans 3:25)

  • Propitiation speaks of the wrath of an offended person being appeased. Note that Jesus is our propitiation through faith in his blood.

4)  It saves us from the wrath of God (Romans 5:9)

  • We have seen above the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of God being trampled at the 2nd By faith in the blood of Jesus Christ we are saved from the wrath of God upon sin and will be returning with Jesus at the 2nd Advent.
