Introduction: According to Webster’s dictionary Faithfulness is firmly adhering to duty; of true fidelity; loyal, true to allegiance. Everything about who God is and does is faithful, Deuteronomy 7:9 “Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God”. God’s faithfulness is the standard or the template a man should follow when they think about being faithful or how a faithful person should be. How do you determine if a person is faithful, by comparing the person to a faithful God.
God is faithful through His:
- Word– Titus 1:9 “Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught”. Notice, this speaks of a Bishop in Vs 7, and how that man should hold fast the faithful word. The point here is that there is a faithful word, we are holding it and reading from it. Why is the word faithful?
- It’s true and hasn’t changed- Psalm 119:160 “Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever”
- It’s settled IN HEAVEN and cannot be changed- Psalms 119:89 “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven”.
- Because God is faithful through His Word, anything that you and I read in His Word, can be trusted. God’s Word is true and settled, therefore it can be tried and trusted.
- Promises– Hebrews 10:23 “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised”. Because God himself is faithful, anything that God promises is faithful.
Some promises in the Bible are conditional, meaning it requires something and some promises are unconditional, they don’t require anything.
- Conditional- Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”. The condition is that you must call upon the name o the Lord to be saved.
- Unconditional- John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”. The Fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace. The peace of God is available to all Christians without condition.
Regardless of which type of promise it is, God is faithful to keep everything He promised to whom He promised it to. That’s a faithful God.
- Provisions- Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus”.
God may not give us everything that we want however, He is faithful to give us all that we need.
Deuteronomy 8:3-4 “Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years”. God was faithful to the Nation of Israel.
II Corinthians 9:8-11 “having all sufficiency in all things” vs11 “being enriched in everything to all bountifulness”.
- Unchanging – Malachi 3:6 “For I am the LORD, I change not, therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed”
James 1:7 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning”.
God has always been faithful and will continue to be faithful in spite of us. All these things we talked about today about God’s faithfulness are unchanging and can be trusted as faithful. We may change, but God doesn’t change.
- God Faithfulness can be described as:
-
- Infinite- Psalm 36:5 “Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacher unto the clouds”.
- Unfailing- Psalm 89:33 “Neverthelss my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail”.
- Everlasting- Psalm 119:90 “Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth”.
- Great- Lamentation 3:23 “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness”.
Conclusion: There is a hymn called “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, but what is it about God’s faithfulness that is so great? Hopefully this morning you were able to see a faithful God through His Word, Promises, Provisions, and His Unchanging. Other gods might claim to be faithful however, when we see the true faithfulness of our God, the God of the Bible, we see that others don’t come close. Our God can be trusted fully and exclusively because He is faithful.
