Charity is the Bible’s love language. This is the kind of love we should have for our mothers and wives. We should have charity for mom.
Charity suffereth long and is kind. Notice it isn’t just long-suffering, but it is simultaneously long-suffering and kind. We’ve seen children and husbands who look like they are suffering long, but they aren’t very kind in the process.
You have to put up with stuff from Mom’s. They have one of the toughest jobs in the world and they don’t earn a wage for what they do. So, be kind while you’re putting up with her stuff.
The Pharisees devised a scheme where you could pay Mom off and then you wouldn’t have to honor her anymore, Matt 15:4-6. There’s not enough money in the world to compensate her for the honor she deserves.
Charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up. To vaunt oneself is to boast. To be puffed up is to swell with pride, to be conceited. We used to say, “His head is too big for his britches”. In these perilous times of 2 Tim 3, children and husbands are lovers of their own selves, boasters, and proud.
If you must boast about someone, boast about your Mom; your wife. Prov 31:28 says, “Her children arise up, an call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her”. Rather than brag about how cool you are, you should brag about her. This is charity for mom.
Charity seeketh not her own. 1 Cor 10:24 “Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth”. Mom’s are just made to do for others and to give of themselves continuously. Read Prov 31 and see how much this virtuous woman does for her family and her household. So, it’s easy to take her selflessness for granted. And it’s easy to seek your own when you should be seeking her wealth. We shouldn’t have to wait for the second Sunday in May to stop and do something nice for our wife or for Mom. Make it a point to seek her wealth, honor, well-being, and benevolence.
Charity is not easily provoked. As we become more familiar with each other in our families, it’s more likely that certain “little” things we do and say begin to annoy others. You want to be careful to not let what Mom does or says, or the way Mom does or says something, provoke you to react or respond negatively. It should take a lot more than a little thing to get under your skin. “Put on charity which is the bond of perfectness”, Col 3:14. Have charity for mom.
Charity never faileth. In every situation and circumstance, your love for Mom or your wife should never fail. Bear, believe, hope, and endure all things. She does these for you. I’ve seen Mom’s bear, believe, hope, and endure all things out of love for their children, while their children continue to selfishly live their lives for themselves or destroy their lives with sin. Mom is always there for them. It would seem that the least you could do is the same for her. Never let your love fail.
Conclusion: the Bible’s love language for Mom’s is charity. It runs deeper than the outward manifestations of your love. It comes from the Spirit of God deep down in your heart. So, have charity for mom.
