Typology of the Battle of Jericho
Joshua 6:1-21
This is the famous passage where Joshua and the children of Israel marched around Jericho for 7 days and on the 7th Day they marched around the city 7 times and the walls of Jericho came down when they blew the rams trumpets and gave a great shout. Many times we have read this story or had it taught to us in Sunday School and have all probably thought why such a strange battle plan.
In this lesson we are going to look at the destruction of Jericho as a type of the destruction of Mystery Babylon in the book of Revelation. This may explain why God had Joshua and the children of Israel do what they did. Also we will see that God does nothing without a reason and this can be helpful in our own lives today.
Types in the Battle of Jericho (This event pictures the 2nd Advent and the destruction of Mystery Babylon)
1) Jericho is a cursed city just like Mystery Babylon (Joshua 6:17 ; Revelation 17,18)
2) The seven days of marching match the seven year tribulation.
- Remember in 2 Peter 3:8 if one day in God’s time equals 1000 years then the millennial reign of Jesus Christ would be on the seventh thousand year of man’s history on this earth. That is why they marched 7 days.
- Also note that there are multiple 7 in the passage; 7 priest, 7 trumpets, 7 days of marching, 7 trips on the 7th The book of Revelations is also full of sevens.
3) They blew rams trumpets before the walls fell on the seventh day, trumpets connected with the 2nd Advent (Joshua 6:5). The feast of trumpets is in the 7th month and is connected with the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ (Leviticus 23:23-25 ; Joel 2:1).
4) Jericho is connected with Harlotry (Rahab) Mystery Babylon is the mother of Harlots and Abominations of the earth (Revelation 17:5)
5) In Joshua 7 we see that Achan took of the spoils which God said were cursed. Note that he took a Babylonish garment (Joshua 7:21)
- Jericho is a good ways from Babylon but note that there garments were there, that is not a coincidence.
6) Jericho is burned with fire, so is Mystery Babylon (Joshua 6:24 ; Revelation 18)
7) The two spies that were sent into Jericho are called messengers in Joshua 6:25, this matches the two witnesses that God sends during the tribulation (Revelation 11)
It is clear that God has a purpose in everything that he does. This should be encouraging for us when we think about our lives. God does not doing anything by accident what happens to us always has a purpose we may not understand it here but that is why we have Romans 8:28.
