Why is the Soul so Valuable?
(Mark 8:34-37)
This passage is a very familiar passage. It is Jesus’ famous words spoken concerning the value of a soul. In this sermon we are going to define as best we can what the soul really is in order to show why it is the most valuable thing you have.
What is the Soul?
The best way I can describe the soul is to say that it is the real you. To understand this statement we will look at two passages.
1) Luke 9:25 (Note the different wording of the same passage)
2) Luke 16:19-25 (Note the characteristics of the soul)
Why is the Soul so valuable?
1) It is all you really own (Genesis 2:7)
- Note that Adam became a living soul.
- You must separate it from this physical life to understand this thought.
2) It will be required of you (Luke 12:16-20)
- At death the soul is separated from the body, it goes to heaven or hell depending upon what you have done with Jesus Christ.
- Eventually you will stand before God and give an account.
3) It is Eternal (Revelation 20:11-15)
- If you die lost without the Lord Jesus Christ, you will be thrown into the lake of fire. This is an eternal punishment and the soul will be there eternally.
4) The price paid to save our souls (Acts 2:25-31)
- Jesus was offered the all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for not being able to save souls (Luke 4:5-8).
- Instead of taking the offer he died on the cross and his soul suffered in hell so that ours would not have to (Acts 2:31).
