Confidence in Princes, Ps 118:9

Confidence in Princes

Ps 118:9 says, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes”.

This time of year there’s a lot of discussion and anxiety about politics.  In which candidates are you going to put your trust?  The Lord said, “It is better to trust in the Lord”.

And here’s why.  Our political system has fostered the following things in our country.

Covetousness.  Prov 29:4 he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it (the land).  The 2024 federal election cycle will cost at least $15.9 billion dollars.  No doubt, those who receive the gift of political contributions owe political favors to those who give to them.  Prov 22:10 he that oppressed the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.  The poor are not oppressed in our country like they are in others.  Here they are made dependents of the government for whom they vote.  The love of money is the root of all evil.  The rich rule.  And the poor will starve to death when the government can no longer afford to feed them.

Lawlessness.  Prov 28:4 they that forsake the law praise the wicked.  Many things that were illegal before are legal today.  Sodomy was illegal.  Now, even same sex marriages are legal.  This sin was the principal cause of the destruction in Sodom and Gomorrah.  Do you know what the Bible called this sin?  Pride, Ezek 16:49.  And do you know what they call it today?  Same thing.  God’s law is out and the law of men is in.

Wickedness.  Prov 25:5 take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.  Righteousness exalteth a nation.  The wicked are not taken away.  The wicked have become large voting groups whose votes are sought by the candidates.  Prov 29:12 If a ruler hearken unto lies, all his servants are wicked.  We hear regularly about corruption in government and this is the reason why.

These three things are the ruin of countries.  So, don’t be alarmed if the candidates of your choice cannot fix the problems.  They are inherent in our system and all candidates have given into them in order to get into office and keep their office. So, don’t put your confidence in princes.  The Lord, on the other hand, you can and should trust.  He doesn’t do these things.
