Power of the Word of God, Heb 4:12-13

Power of the Word of God

Heb 4:12 says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart”.  Today we are going to discuss the power of the word of God.

The power to create.  Heb 11:3, “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear”.

There was nothing material here in eternity past.  Gen 1 tells you how the things you see came into existence.  God said.  And through faith in the words of God we understand this.  Therefore, those who don’t believe what he wrote will never understand the origin or the continuation of our existence, Heb 1:3, Col 1:16-17.

You cannot discern how we got here by examining what you see.  Yet, scientists and researchers continue to study the universe and the earth looking for the answer.  Paul said of them, “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth”, 2 Tim 3:7.  The answer’s in the word.

I had a brief discuss with a graduate student studying embryonic cells.  I asked her, “When you study these cells, what do you see”?  She replied, “There’s more that we don’t know than that we know”.  Ecc 11:5 addresses their efforts to find the answers.  “Thou knowest not… how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child”.

The power to save.  Jas 1:21, “… receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls”.  Creation was corrupted by sin.  And we are dead in trespasses and sins before we are saved.  Nothing in the universe can remedy this problem but the word of God.  All the research and science cannot fix this.

Jesus, the living Word, Jn 1, who created everything and us, gave himself and shed his blood to atone for our sins.  He redeemed what sin corrupted.  And it’s through his written word that we can have faith to believe in him and be saved.  Eph 2:8-9, Rom 1:17.

In Heb 4:12 the power of the word of God divides asunder soul and spirit.  They are inseparable.  God breathed into Adam the breath of life, and he became a living soul.  It’s hard to discern which is instrumental in things we do, say, think, and feel.  But at death the spirit returns to God who gave it, Ecc 12:7.  If saved, they both go to God, 2 Cor 5:8.  If lost, the spirit returns to God and your soul goes to hell, Lk 16.  Through the power of the word of God, the Lord divides them.

The power to discern.  Heb 4:12-13, “For the word of God… is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart”. Jer 17:9-10, the heart is deceitful above all things… I the Lord search the heart.  Jesus knew the thoughts of the Pharisees.

And he knows your thoughts and intents.  He gets down deep inside like dividing the joints and marrow.  He knows you down to the very core of your being.  You need to get in the book and let the power of the word of God search you.  This is the only way you are going to know where you are with God.

The power to clean.  Jn 15:3, “Now are ye clean through the word which I have spoken unto you”.   Once you are saved and the word of God discerns your thoughts and intents, the same word cleanses you and makes you right with God.  You are sanctified by the word.  Jn 17:17.  You become what you weren’t before.  You are a new creature and you look like a new creature.

Conclusion: If you aren’t saved yet, you should be saved today.  If you are saved, let the power of the word of God change you.  And don’t let people persuade you away from the word of God.  It is the single most powerful force in the universe.
