Jesus’s Death and Burial
In Lk 23:46-46 we read about the death and burial of Jesus.
Jesus’s Sayings – Lk 23:46
Here are the words Jesus spoke while on the cross.
- Lk 23:34 Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
- Lk 23:43 Today, shalt thou be with me in paradise.
- Jn 19:26 Woman, behold thy son!
- Jn 19:27 Behold thy mother!
- Jn 19:28 I thirst.
- Mk 15:34 Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani. Ps 22:1
- Jn 19:30 It is finished.
- Lk 23:46 Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.
Jesus’s Death – Lk 23:46
He gave up the ghost. At his death, his spirit departed to the Father, and his soul departed into the lower parts of the earth, Matt 12:40. Gen 35:16-19, when Rachel died here soul was in departing.
Jn 19:31-33, the soldiers brake the legs of the thieves but not his. Jn 19:36, this fulfilled Ex 12:46.
Jn 19:34-35 the soldiers pierced his side and blood and water came out. Jn 19:37, this fulfilled and will fulfill Zech 12:10.
According to 1 Jn 5:6-8, the blood and water confirmed his divinity and humanity. John recorded it “that ye might believe”.
The People’s Reactions – Lk 23:47-49
The centurion said, “Certainly this was a righteous man”. And Matt 27:54 says that the centurion and those that were with him feared greatly and said, “Truly this was the Son of God”.
The people that came together to that sight smote their breasts. See Lk 18:13, in humility.
All his acquaintance stood afar off beholding. Included women, Matt 27:55-56.
Joseph and Nicodemus – Lk 23:50-54
Jospeh was a counseller, a good man, and just. He had not consented to their counsel and deed. And he waited for the kingdom of God (like Lk 2:25 Simeon, Lk 2:38 Anna). Matt 27:57 he was rich (fulfilling Is 53:9), and he was a disciple of Jesus.
Joseph begged the body of Jesus, took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulcher (Matt 27:60 his own new tomb), where never man laid.
Nicodemus also came, Jn 19:39-40. He brought the myrrh and aloes which were also wrapped in the linen.
Jesus’s Burial – Lk 23:54-56
The women beheld the sepulcher, how his body was laid. They they returned and prepared spices.
The day of Jesus’s death was the Preparation day (Mk 15:42 the day before the sabbath, which was a high day, Jn 19:31). This was the sabbath of the feast of unleavened bread, Thursday. Thus, they prepared spices on Friday and observed the Saturday sabbath, as well. Then they came to the tomb Sunday morning.
