In Lk 24:13-35 we read the account of the two men who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus. The easiest way to study this passage is to read through it and comment along the way. Then we’ll go back and look at some of the Old Testament references to the prophecies Jesus would have discussed with them.
Lk 24:13 Two men were traveling to a village called Emmaus. It was three score (60) furlongs (1/8 mile) from Jerusalem, or about 7.5 miles.
Lk 24:14-15 They talked about everything that had happened. Jesus drew near and went with them.
Lk 24:16 They could see him but they couldn’t discern that it was he. They didn’t expect to see him and he certainly didn’t look like he did the last time they saw him.
Lk 24:17 He asked about their sad conversation.
Lk 24:18 Cleopas answered, “art thou stranger in Jerusalem”? You don’t know?
Lk 24:19 They were talking about what happened to Jesus… Nazareth, prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and the people. The people had been astonished at his doctrine, Mk 1:22, authority, Lk 4:32, power. The miracles he performed testified to his deity.
Lk 24:20 our chief priests and rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and crucified him. Peter said to the Jews about what they had done to Jesus, “Whom ye crucified”, Acts 2:36.
Lk 24:21 We trusted that he should have redeemed Israel. And this is the third day. Anna looked for redemption in Jerusalem, Lk 2:38. They just couldn’t figure how their “redeemer” could have died.
Lk 24:22-24 women went to the sepulcher and didn’t find his body but saw vision of angels saying he’s alive. Some went and confirmed that it was so but couldn’t find Jesus. These were Peter and John.
Lk 24:25-27 Jesus answered them “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that prophets have spoken”. Christ had to suffer before he could enter his glory. So, Jesus expounded in all the scriptures, the things concerning himself. Notice he began with Moses (confirming Moses’s existence and authorship).
