Jesus is Revealed by Breaking Bread
Luke 24:13-35
In this sermon we will be looking at how Jesus appeared to two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus. At first they did not realize that it was him but after he broke bread with them, their eyes were opened and they knew him. This should cause us to ask the question, how well do we know Jesus? Also, we will see that our knowledge of Jesus Christ is connected with breaking bread and by this we mean the word of God.
The position of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus:
Below we will list some things regarding the two disciples that we can see in the passage. If we are honest with ourselves we can see ourselves in these two men.
- They were discussing the events of the week (verse 14-15)
- Their eyes were held from knowing Jesus (verse 16)
- They were sad because of the death of Jesus (verse 17)
- They had lost their faith somewhat (verse 21)
- They were uncertain of the testimony of others (verse 22-24)
- Not trusting in the scriptures (verse 25-26)
We must ask ourselves does the description of the men sound like us? Are we burdened and saddened by the news and trials of the present day? If so, the answer for us is the same as it was for them. Break Bread (the word of God) with Jesus and our outlook will change.
Breaking Bread with Jesus:
Jesus began at Moses and expounded the things in the scriptures concerning himself. (I bet that was the greatest bible study ever given). One of the most amazing things in the passage is that their eyes were opened when he broke bread and gave it to them. This makes perfect sense because Jesus is the bread of Life (John 6:25-35). Therefore, to know him we must search the scriptures (John 5:39). Let us use the example of manna representing Jesus Christ.
Jesus’ reference to Manna : (John 6)
Manna is a type of the word of God and remember that it is also a type of Jesus Christ because Jesus is the word of God. In John 6 see says that he is the true bread from heaven .
Things about manna;
- Connected with the word of God (Deuteronomy 8:3)
- Manna like the word of God is a universal food it is in every culture in some form or another, and is good for all ages.
- It is white (Exodus 16:31). This represents purity and righteousness, just like the word of God.
- Tasted like honey (Psalm 119:103, the words of God are better than honey)
- Manna was loathed by the carnal Israelites (Numbers 21:5). The word of God is loathed by carnal Christians.
- Manna was to be laid up for the next generation to see (Exodus 16:33), the word of God should be done the same way.
- The manna sustained the children of Israel until they reached the promised land (Exodus 16:35), the word of God will sustain us until we reach heaven.
The Results of Breaking of Bread (Or the word of God) :
1) Their hearts did burn within them (verse 32)
- If the fire and love of Jesus has gone out in heart or has died down the best way to rekindle it is by searching the scriptures and letting him reveal himself to you.
2) They had strength for action (verse 33 compared with verse 29)
- They were tired in verse 29 but after the study in the word with Jesus they were ready to return to Jerusalem.
- The word of God is the best thing to restore your strength.
3) Their faith was restored (verse 34)
- Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17)
4) They had a story to tell (verse 35)
- We hear many stories of defeated or fallen preacher and church members what we need to hear is more stories of those who have renewed themselves and found great strength and help in the word of God.
