The Woman, Gen 2:21-24 – Jul 26, 2026

THE WOMAN – A TYPE OF THE CHURCH

God caused Adam to sleep, removed one of his ribs, and God made the rib a woman. The whole process is a perfect picture of the bride of Christ (the church) coming forth from Christ’s own body to become his wife. Notice the similarities:

Both Come From Death

  • God made Adam to sleep (a picture of death – Jn 11:11-13) to get his bride.
  • Christ had to die to get his bride, the church (Eph 5:25).

Both Husbands Were Pierced

  • God opened Adam’s side and took one of his ribs, and then closed up his flesh (Gen 2:21).
  • Christ’s side was pierced (Jn 19:34), probably under 5th rib (2 Sam 2:23).

Both Come From Their Husband’s Body

  • The woman came from Adam’s body (Gen 2: 22).
  • The bride comes from Christ’s body (1 Cor 12:12-13; 27).

Both Are Presented To Their Husbands

  • The woman was brought to Adam (Gen 2:22).
  • The church will be presented to Christ (Eph 5:27; 1 Thes 4:16-17).

Both Are Of Their Husband’s Flesh And Bones

  • The woman was of Adam’s flesh and his bones (Gen 2:23).
  • We are members of Christ’s flesh and of his bones (Eph 5:30).

Both Are Virgins

  • The woman was a virgin when she was given to Adam (Gen 2:22, 25).
  • Christ’s bride will be a virgin when she is given to Christ (2 Cor 11:2).

Both Are One Flesh With Their Husband

  • The man cleaved to the woman and they became one flesh (Gen 2:24).
  • Christ is joined unto his wife and they are one flesh (Eph 5:31).

Both Are Mysteries

  • It is a mystery how God brought forth a woman from Adam’s body.
  • The marriage of the church to Christ is a great mystery (Eph 5:32).
