Genesis 19:1-14 The Angels warn Lot CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
When the angels arrive in Sodom, they find Lot sitting in the gate. He invites them in for the night. But the men of the city are homosexuals and they want to “know” Lot’s guests. Lot refuses their advance and offers his virgin daughters instead. They refuse his offer and attack him. Before he is killed by the mob, he is rescued by the angels who warn him of the coming destruction. When he goes to warn his married daughters and sons-in-law, they don’t take him seriously.
Lot Sat in the Gate
When the Bible talks about a man “sitting in the gate,” it shows that he is in a position of influence, where the king and people with authority sit (2 Samuel 19:8; Jeremiah 38:7 Daniel 2:49). So, Lot had evidently risen to a ruling position in the city government or in some official capacity with the king.
The Homosexuals Surround Lot’s House
When the homosexual men found out that there were some new men in town, they demanded to “know” them. They wanted to “know” them in the biblical sense (Matthew 1:25; Num. 31:35; Genesis 24:16). They didn’t want to merely become acquainted with them. Thus, the sin of homosexuality is called “sodomy”, for Sodom. And the men who practice that sin are called “sodomites” (Deut. 23:17, 1 Kings 14:24).
Lot Negotiates with the Sodomites
Lot went outside to offer the crowd his daughters to appease them. When he addressed them, he called them “Brethren.” Even though he was righteous and not one of them (2 Peter 2:7-8), he had no separation between himself and these wicked men (2 Cor. 6:14-18). He considered them brothers. Nevertheless, they vexed him.
Today, the government protects the “rights” of sodomites, and professing Christians welcome them into their pulpits. The country and many of the people in it have gone crazy!
Lot offered his two daughters to the mob. That’s because guests, according to Bedouin etiquette, were afforded protection even if it meant harm to the host’s own family (Judges 19:22-25). It is strange what men are expected to give up appeasing sodomites. The mob refused Lot’s offer and attacked him, instead. Did it ever occur to you that no matter what concessions you make with sodomites in order to appease them, they are never satisfied? They demand more and more “rights.” Today, they want marital status and benefits and the right to “adopt” (or is that “recruit?”) children. What will it be tomorrow?
The Angels Rescue Lot
The angels pulled Lot back into the house to save him from the angry sodomites. Then the angels blinded them so that they could not find the door to Lot’s house (2 Kings 6:18, Acts 13:11). Blindness is a good way to confuse the enemy.
The Angels Warned Lot to Get His Family Out
The only way to protect yourself when there is no hope of converting sinners from the error of their ways (James 5:20) is to leave.
Revelation 18:4 – Tribulation saints are warned to come out of Mystery Babylon.
2 Cor. 6:17 – Christians are warned to come out from among the world.
Matthew 10:14 – Soul winners are warned to come out of Christ rejecting houses.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 – The Lord calls his church out of the world before he pours out his vengeance at the second coming (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).
Joseph Farah, James Dobson and others are telling parents to get their kids out of public schools because of the pro-homosexual curriculum. This curriculum conditions children to accept as perfectly normal that which God calls “abomination,” (Lev. 18:22).
When Lot went to warn his daughters and sons-in-law, who had been conditioned to accept the local custom, they thought he was joking. Haven’t people thought that you were joking when you warned them about hell?
Why God Destroyed Sodom
Sodomy was not the only problem in Sodom. According to Ezekiel 16:49, there were other sins, as well:
- Pride (Proverbs 16: 18)
- Fullness of bread (Proverbs 23: 21)
- Abundance of idleness (Proverbs 6:6-11; Exodus 32: 6)
- Neglect of the poor (James 5:1-6; 2:1-9)
Can you see any difference between the USA today and Sodom back then? You might say, “We care for the poor.” However, in this country, most of the programs that help the poor also pad the pockets of the rich. Truthfully, but for the prayers of some of God’s people, this country would have already gone up in smoke!
