Genesis 2:23, Titus 2:4-5, Proverbs 31:10-31
A wife’s role in the marriage and in the family is laid out in the Bible very clearly. God made men and women to compliment each other, so let’s look at how that works.
Wife’s Role in Companionship

- She shall be called woman because she was taken out of man, Genesis 2:23. The word “Woman” is a contraction of two words “womb” and “man”.
- Proverbs 18:22 – a wife is a good thing
- 1 Corinthians 11:8-9 – woman created for the man – strength in God’s use of diversity
Wife’s Role as Character Builder (Titus 2:4-5)
- Sobriety – because the tendency will be to pull your hair out sometimes
- Love husbands properly vs Odious woman: Proverbs 30:23 (hateful)
- Love children properly vs Odious woman: Proverbs 30:23 (hateful)
- Discreet -1 Timothy 2:9-10, 1 Peter 3:3-6 – to curb desires, self controlled, sane vs Foolish woman – Proverbs 9:13 (clamorous, simple, ignorant)
- Chaste – 1 Peter 3:2 – pure from carnality, exciting holiness
- Keeper of the Home – 1 Timothy 5:14 & Proverbs 31:10-28 (see below) vs Proverbs 14:1 (tears down her house)
- Good – 1 Thessalonians 2:7-8 (verse 8 defines gentleness as: willing to have imparted unto you our own souls) vs Contentious woman: Proverbs 21:9, 19, Proverbs 27:15
- Obedient to husbands – 1 Peter 3:1, Ephesians 5:22-24, Colossians 3:18
-
Wives shape character of children as they are the first and most visible example of a soul subject to another.
