When you get saved you become a son of God, so you can honestly have the confidence that God is going to lead you (Rom 8:14). As a son of God you expect God to lead you by the Spirit of God.  However, you must be willing to follow His lead and be alert to His guidance (Ps 37:23, 73:24, Jer 10:23). In verse six we have a promise from God to direct our steps. If you take Him up on His promise there are three conditions.

3 Conditions of God’s Promise

Trust in the Lord – You must trust Him with all of your heart. That is not necessarily an easy thing to do because in certain circumstances you’re not going to want to trust Him; you are too afraid of the consequences.  Where He takes you may lead you into a place where you do not want to go. Just remember that God knows how to get you to where you need and want to be.

Lean not unto thine own understanding – Practically speaking you have been given a mind that is logical so that you can reason and understand things. It can work with the knowledge you gain to get your tasks and goals accomplished. Because of your ability to reason and understand, it is often hard to trust God’s understanding and relinquish your own understanding of the situation. There is a precarious balance between common sense and trusting the Lord (2Cor 5:7).

In all thy ways acknowledge Him – This too can be difficult when the Lord leads us to a place where we do not want to be. To acknowledge Him means to recognize fully God’s hand and leading in all aspects of our lives, whether it be in success, in failure, in joy, in sorrow, in reproach, in blessing, in bereavement, or in anything that you attain or accomplish for the Lord.

If you will do these three things your paths will be  in the will of God. Then when you are through with this life and look back on it from Heaven’s perspective you will be able to say that it was worth it all.
