In That Day Is. 12:1-6 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO

This chapter begins with the phrase “in that day.”  We know, then, that this is a reference to something associated with the Second Coming of Jesus.  We’ll make a few comments about the verses in this short chapter and then we will study, in particular, the wells of salvation mentioned in v.3.

v.1 – Thine anger is turned away – this is a complete change from the prophecies in Is 9:12, 17 and 21 and Is 10:4.  In those verses his anger was not turned away.  Those verses are tribulation references.  Is 12:1 is a Second Advent passage revealing that the anger of the Lord will be turned away from Israel.

v.2 – God is my salvation – the Lord is the salvation of Israel and he is also their strength and song – this is clearly a Second Advent passage praising the Lord for the defeat of Israel’s enemies – compare Ex 15, the song of Moses, which Israel sung at the defeat of Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, a picture of the defeat of the antichrist.

v.2 – JEHOVAH – here and in Ex 6:3, Ps 83:18, Is 26:4 – it is the name of the Lord, particularly as it relates prophetically to the Second Coming of Jesus and the defeat of Israel’s enemies.  Jesus means, “Jehovah saves.”

v.4 – his name is exalted – Phil 2:9-11

v.5 – in all the earth – Is 11:9

v.6 – the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee – Ezek 48:35 – clearly a Second Advent passage when Jesus is on the earth and ruling from the throne of David in Jerusalem

The Wells of Salvation – v.3 – this reference is both spiritual and literal – the spiritual application is to the Lord [God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit] – see Jn 4:10-14; Jn 7:37-39; Jn 6:35; Jer 2:13 – the literal application is to the water of the river flowing from the throne of God – see Rev 7:17; 21:6; 22:1, 17 – this river of water was pictured by the water that flowed from the rock in the wilderness [comp 1 Cor 10:4] – you can find similar comparisons to spiritual and literal applications such as: Jesus is the light of the world [Jn 1:5, 8:12] and when he appeared to Paul he was seen as literal light [Acts 9, see also Rev 21:23].
