Scorn – (n) open disrespect for a person or thing accompanied by a feeling of intense dislike – (v) to scorn is to look down on with disdain.

Scorner – a person who expresses contempt by remarks or facial expressions; a scoffer at religion.

To laugh to scorn is to mock openly.

Now how do identify a scorner – here are his characteristics:

He will mock the work of God – Neh 2:19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king? – When I was street preaching in Pensacola, a scorner hollered, “Go back to Chattahoochee!”  That’s the local mental hospital.

He will give an ungodly witness – Prov 19:28 An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity. Jehovah’s Witnesses are a good example – you show them that the judgment of God includes hell and they scorn it.

He will not listen when you rebuke him – Prov 13:1 A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke – like a person who will not take a rebuke from the word of God – a Jehovah’s Witness to whom I witnesses was not that way and so she got saved.

He will never learn – Prov 14:6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth – like a young man going round and round about what he knows is wrong but who will not listen to anyone in order to fix it.

He is proud and haughty and angry – Prov 21:24 Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath – he knows it all already.

When you reprove him he will try to shame you – Prov 9:7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

When you reprove him he will hate you – Prov 9:8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. Prov 15:12 A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise – so the wife of the scorner made her husband as comfortable down here as she could because where he was going he was going to be miserable.

Men get tired of him – Prov 24:9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

When you get rid of him, contention ceases – Prov 22:10 Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease – getting rid of the scorner improves families, businesses and churches.
