Boast Not Thyself of Tomorrow

Boast not thyself of to Morrow…

Proverbs 27:10

Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

May 20th I was upset because I had jury duty. On the night before I was in a car wreck. By the grace of God my family and I survived the broad side collision and resulting spin, roll, and total loss of our brand new car.
Matt.6:34

There is plenty to concern yourself with today.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
James 4:13-16

13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

The Lord makes it very clear, that to presume that anything is going to take place in the future is boasting and therefore evil.

Luke 12:13-21

13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.
14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

This man was boasting of things to come. All his plans changed in a heart beat.  In the Bible there is a period of time called “ a moment”. Webster’s 1828 defines it as “the most minute and indivisible part of time”.  That’s fast. I learned lately how fast air bags are, and “a moment” is far faster than that. Look what the Bible says is fast:

1 Cor. 15:52

The Rapture is Fast

52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

2 Cor. 4:17-18

Life is Fast

17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Only one life, will soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Job 21:13

Death is Fast

13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

Ps. 73:19

Judgment is Fast

19 How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

Luke 4:5

Temptation comes Fast

5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

We need to be concerned with today, not yesterday and not focused on tomorrow. Do what you need to be doing today, and boast not thyself of to morrow.
